It’s more frolicking cross-dressing mayhem in Princess Princess. First the three boys seem to have a stalker and they’re pulling their hair trying to figure out who it is. And it couldn’t be happening at the worse time. The three ‘princesses’ have to put on a musical performance to boost moral but Mikoto can’t sing! During summer break both Tohru and Yujiro spend time with Akira and learn all about his unusual family. Then later back at school, Yujiro learns a bit more about Tohru when his sister arrives on campus to cause problems for Tohru. The final episode has the existence of the princess program facing possible extinction if the new director of the academy has anything to say about it. This could be the end of the boys wearing dresses in this volume of Princess Princess!

A lot of the episodes in this volume touch closely on the actual manga stories such as the singing event, the visit to Akira’s house, and the trouble with Tohru’s sister.  But as much as the printed pages have been fun to read, actually experiencing Mikoto and his fellow princesses performing the theme song to Cutey Honey (“Honey Flash!”) was worth the price of admission right there.  The anime has a lot of fun with the over the top reactions of the characters, particularly during the visit to Akira’s home. His beautiful family all aren’t who they appear to be and Tohru and Yujiro are awestruck and crazy to figure just who is who in relation to Akira. In the end it proves a bonding experience between the three classmates. Their reactions and the song are priceless.

The touch of drama enters with the appearance of Tohru’s sister. It’s only intorduced so far. But it looks like her appearance is something that will play out more in the future so be ready to find out the whole story in the upcoming episodes of the future volume.

A particularly impressive aspect of the anime is how well it’s worked in the original manga stories into the anime. The anime even has the same obsession held by Tohru and Yujiro to be able to glimpse Mikoto’s elusive girlfriend.  The great comedy and catchy animation make this one of the more entertaining cross-dressing comedies available.
