A new alternate reality series on Evangelion is introduced in Campus Apocalypse. Shinji is your average boy rather than the timid and emotionally scarred introvert from the original series. He attends NERV academy and is starting to notice everything is not how it seems. The new transfer student Kaworu is hanging around awfully tightly with Shinji’s crush Rei. When Shinji spies the two along with Asuka fighting a strange person with wings using weapons, Shinji is in for a big surprise. Apparently they are chosen to fight the Angels, creatures that possess dead bodies and have incredible powers. At night this team stalks the predators in a secret battle for humanity and now Shinji is given little choice but to join them.

If you look at this manga and separate it from Evangelion, then it is an intriguing new thriller filled with action and mystery. The weapons will look familiar to EVA fans as is the case for the spear of destiny Rei wields.  Misato is there as a teacher, but everything else is pretty much on its own. There is the odd wink and nudge towards the original Evangelion cannon and that would be it, the story otherwise embarks on its own territory. The manga has excellent art work, almost film noir in genre and presentation. I love the look of the characters and the battles as well as the reinterpretation of the Angels in this alternate universe. There are still a lot of questions needing answers and it is a promising beginning. However, having said that, I could see how a story taken so far off of the original cannon might rub diehard fans the wrong way. Therefore if you’re an Evangelion fan, take it with a grain of salt and otherwise enjoy what could be an intriguing new actions series.

The manga also includes four full color pages at the beginning.

IN SUMMARY:
It’s an alternate action series of the famed Evangelion legend that fans are either going to love or hate.  Personally I like the different slant and look of the series.
