Advanced Food Technology

Advanced Food Technology (AFT) provides technologies for the development of space exploration human food supplies. The food system must be safe, nutritious, and acceptable to the crews of long duration missions. AFT includes food preservation, packaging, and processing technologies. Research and technology efforts in this area focus on developing a stored food system with a 3 to 5 year shelf life using high barrier, light weight packaging. This packaging may also be reusable or recyclable. A second area of focus is crop processing technologies that can provide a significant amount of nutrition to crews using crops grown in space. A third area of focus is the development of menu and meal preparation technologies needed to provide the required nutrition, variety, and acceptability to crewmembers.
