Critical air pollution (e.g., exposure to formaldehyde, methyl sulfides) in a closed spacecraft is the most serious threat to crew health and can be expected approximately once per year of operation. The Mir water recovery system showed that cabin humidity condensate can also be polluted, and the cold water exceeded U.S. microbial standards. Allergies and hypersensitivities may develop from prolonged exposure to chemical and microbial sources in a confined environment. Research and technology efforts focus on risk assessment and exposure standards for contaminants, monitoring to identify and detect contaminants, and management strategies for a toxic exposure. Identification of individuals who are highly susceptible to environmental chemicals or other environmental contaminants is also under consideration.
