INFRARED ASTRONOMICAL SATELLITE

(IRAS)

From February 9, 1983 to November 22, 1983, the Infrared Astronomical Satellite conducted a survey of the sky at thermal infrared wavelengths from a 900 km polar orbit about the Earth. This survey consisted of 5749 scans (identified by SOP OBS), along lines of constant solar elongation, between 60 and 120 degrees solar elongation. 95% of the sky was covered twice and 72% was covered three times by IRAS. Apart from detailed observations of the zodiacal cloud, IRAS made over 8000 detections of asteroids.

Focal Plane Array Detector Information

IRAS used an array of 62 detectors located at the focal plane of the telescope. They were divided into 8 parallel modules, two for each color band (12, 25, 60 and 100 microns), and maintained at a temperature of 2.6K.

FOCAL PLANE DETECTORS FILE DATA

BAND 2 ( 25 MICRON) SPECTRAL RESPONSE FILE DATA
BAND 3 ( 60 MICRON) SPECTRAL RESPONSE FILE DATA
BAND 4 (100 MICRON) SPECTRAL RESPONSE FILE DATA

Satellite Position and Pointing Information

The Scan History File identifies each scan (SOP OBS) and gives its pointing geometry and length. The Satellite Positions File gives the position of the satellite and Earth in rectangular coordinates at 200 second intervals.

Scans of the Sky - The IRAS Zodiacal History File

The Zodiacal History File consists of 5749 data files of individual scans. Each scan was roughly constant in ecliptic longitude. Thermal sky brightness information has been binned into Low Resolution (1/2 degree cross-scan, 1/2 degree in-scan) and Medium Resolution (1/2 degree cross-scan, 2 arcminute in-scan) products.
