Wednesday 1 March

Something that’s been bugging me constantly about Nirvana is the date of when Kurt first met Courtney.

The ‘official’ version is that the pair first met in Portland 1990 - as told by Azerrad, Cross et al. There’s no factual basis for this story at all, just Courtney and her concern at not appearing too much of a golddigger.

I happen to know that I actually introduced the couple in LA at a Butthole Surfers/L7 concert in May 1991 - but the ‘official’ biographers choose not to believe this version, even though I have many close mutual friends who back me up here. Trouble is, the only person who could really verify my story has been dead for over a decade now.

Today, while researching the book, found this tucked away in a joint Kurt + Courtney interview with Sassy magazine, January 1992: “I saw him play in Portland in 1988,” says Courtney. “I thought he was passionate and cute, but I couldn’t tell if he was smart, or had any integrity. And then I met him at a show about a year ago.” “Butthole Surfers,” says Kurt. “And L7,” adds Courtney, “I really pursued him…”

Ha! Take that crap revisionist historians.

Absolutely. Sassy ruled, very hard.

I remember learning two life-changing things from one issue alone:

1) Who Willa Cather was and why she mattered to the history of America

2) Why I had spots on my posterior. (I still remember the article headline: "I don’t mean to gross you out but why do I have zits on my butt?"

EXCERPTS FROM REVISIONIST HISTORIANS:

1) http://www.nirvanaclub.com
"Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love first met in 1989 at a Nirvana gig in Portland, Oregon…the pair didn’t get together for another two years when they met again in 1991, after Dave Grohl, being a friend of Courtney, had introduced them to eachother."

2)Nirvana: The Day to Day Illustrated Journals by Carrie Borzillo-Vrenna.
Page 31-"January 21, 1989: Nirvana opened for the Dharma Bums at the Satyricon club in Portland…[Courtny’s] quoted in a 1992 Sassy story that she saw them play in Portland in 1988, but the band never played that town in that year…"
Page 69-"May 29, 1991: Nirvana plays a last-minute show at the Jabberjaw in Los Angeles with I Own the Sky openeing up. In the audience was Iggy Pop and Courtney Love with her good friend Jennifer Finch, L7’s bassist and Dave Grohl’s girlfriend. Flipside writer Carlos ‘Cake’ Nunez, who’s a big collector of Nirvana bootlegs too, has a tape of the show where you can hear Courtney jokingly yelling out, ‘Jennifer loves you, Kurt!’"

3)Courtney Love: Queen of Noise by Melissa Rossi. Page 96-"Courtney had already made a point of befriending Nirvana’s handsome drummer, Dave Grohl, a former beau of her old friend Jennifer Finch. Being pals with Dave was an easy way to keep tabs on Kurt. Courtney and Dave soon became fast phone friends, talking for hours…She mentioned to him that she had a big crush on Kurt; Dave confided that, despite his seeming ambivalence, Kurt had a crush on her. Through Dave she passed a present on to Kurt [Ed. note: A heart-shaped box]…Page 97-"That May at a Butthole Surfers and L7 concert in Los Angeles…At the show that night, according to Everett True, a reporter for the popular British music paper Melody Maker, Courtney was ‘off her head…forcing whisky down my throat and rampaging wild.’…Midway through the interview Courtney even called her manager to brag that Everett was madly in love with her. But that night she had another man on her mind-Kurt-and he was there."

4) Never Fade Away: The Kurt Cobain Story by Dave Thompson. Page 110-"Courtney’s introduction to the Nirvana camp came via Jennifer Finch, who in turn was friends with Dave Grohl…"

5) Courtney Love the Real Story by Poppy Z. Brite. Page 107- "In winter 1990, Courtney started having long phone conversations with Dave Grohl, Nirvana’s drummer and one of Jennifer Finch’s boyfriends…During one of their talks, Courtney let slip that she had a crush on Kurt…Dave told Courtney that Kurt liked her too, and that Kurt was miserable after a recent breakup with his girlfriend, Bikini Kill drummer Tobi Vail" Page 108-"Encouraged by the breakup and by Dave’s revelation, she put together a special package for Dave to give Kurt."

What I’d really love to see is the supposed 1991 The Year Punk Broke outtake of Courtney Love announcing "Kurt Cobain makes my heart stop, but he’s a shit."

i think i just found out when they really met the first time. i found an interview of kurt and courtney with nardwuar. here’s the script:

Did you first meet Courtney, and this is Courtney Love, did you-I’ve heard-because we’re here in Canada. Vancouver, B.C., Canada. I heard a rumor, I think I might have read it in Interview Magazine, that Kurt and Courtney at a D-
Kurt- [cough] [cough] [cough]…[cough-cough, cough] [cough]
Courtney-Stop! That’s rude.

Aaa.. Did you first meet at a D.O.A. gig? In Portland, Oregon?
Kurt- Um-hmm. (Curt slyly flips off Nardwuar while holding pizza slice)
Courtney- [Laughs]

So there is really a Canadian connection then.
Kurt- Wasn’t it No Means No?… It was one of our shows!
Courtney- D.O.A.
Kurt- It was our show… It was my show. I played with D.O.A. a couple of times. I don’t remember where.

But was that-wa-was-so Canadian connection, a Canadian band has something to do with Kurt and Courtney.
Kurt- Like, yes. I don’t, honestly I don’t remember which show it was.
Courtney- I was too drunk.
Kurt- Me too.

Does anyone think it’s weird to feel a connection to him? I never got into rock music until I was about 14 (1997), but my older sister listened to Nirvana so I was introduced to their music a little bit before Kurt’s death. After he died, even though I wasn’t really into their music, and didn’t know much about him (at first I didn’t even think he was very attractive), I was extremely devastated and in denial that he was dead. Shortly afterward, a friend of mine started a band and played one of their songs in our school talent show, and then I really got into their music. Since then I’ve felt a connection to him, and a voice has even been nagging at me to visit his hometown. Am I crazy? Probably. Or maybe it’s because I’m a Pisces and can actually relate to some of his lyrics? Maybe both?

I forgot to mention that the original post (March 1 2006) was my 23rd birthday. Wow… coincidence that I ran across this? I don’t believe in coincidence……….
