PREVIOUS DZOGCHEN RINPOCHES

Sixth Dzogchen Rinpoche Sixth Dzogchen Rinpoche - Jigdrel Changchub Dorje (1935-1959)
The Sixth Dzogchen Rinpoche died tragically at an early age during the turmoil in Tibet during the 1950s. He was a close friend of the present 14th Dalai Lama who bestowed upon Rinpoche the title of Hu Thok - the highest ranking after the King of Tibet.
Fifth Dzogchen Rinpoche Fifth Dzogchen Rinpoche - Thubten Chökyi Dorje (1872-1935)
Throughout the Kham region of Eastern Tibet, none was more famous than the Fifth Dzogchen Rinpoche. He was as famous and well respected as the Dalai Lama, and his miracles and powers of clairvoyance were witnessed by many ordinary people. He was an authority in the recognition of reincarnated lamas from all the schools; more than 200 such tulkus were recognised by him. During the latter part of his life, he lived together with up to 30 young tulkus of Dzogchen Monastery, clothing and feeding them with his own hands. This was considered most unusual activity for such a high lama.
Fourth Dzogchen Rinpoche Fourth Dzogchen Rinpoche - Mingyur Namkhe Dorje (1793-?)
In 1842, during the time of the fourth incarnation of Dzogchen Rinpoche, Dzogchen Monastery was almost totally destroyed by an earthquake. Rinpoche rebuilt the monastery with help and guidance from other lamas, especially one of his main disciples, the celebrated scholar Gyalse Shenpen Thaye. Then, in turn with the support and guidance of Dzogchen Rinpoche, Shenpen Thaye established the Shri Singha monastic scripture college, or shedra, which later became a model for studies and training throughout the Nyingma world.

Pema Rigdzin was a disciple of the Great Fifth Dalai Lama. He became known as the Dzogchen Rinpoche after another of his teachers declared that he had heard Dzogchen as a teaching, but never seen it in a person except in him. In 1684, at the age of sixty-one, Pema Rigdzin located the hidden valley of Rudam, a sacred place which Guru Padmasambhava visited and blessed with his presence. Together with his three main disciples, there he established the monastery of Dzogchen Rudam Orgyen Samten Chöling - the Dzogchen Monastery.
