PlayStation 2 ships over 150 million

PlayStation 2 by Wesley Yin-Poole

The 10 years and 11-month-old PlayStation 2 has shot through the 150 million units shipped mark, Sony has announced.

The PS2, which was first sold in March 2000 in Japan, is the best-selling console of all time.

An eye-watering 1.52 billion units of PS2 software have been sold worldwide as of the end of December 2010.

The PS2's best-selling game is Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, which shifted 17.33 million units. In second place is Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec with 14.89 million. In third is Gran Turismo 4, with 10.76 million sold.

A total of 10,828 games have been created for the console.

Sony said it expects continued demand for the system in Eastern Europe, South East Asia, the Middle East and South America.

While the dreamcast is my favourite console ever, it has to be said that the ps2 is, by any measure, the best console ever. This is another well-deserved milestone.

Glad to see Gran Tusirsmo 4 sold so well, even though I've never heard of it.

Mine is still going strong, although boxed up in storage upstairs. Great console. Used the "white noise" menu music to chill out to many a time. PS1 is still my all time fav though.. ;-)

To be fair to the PS2, its fucking superb.

Played on mine all day Saturday, in the day and age where games are 5 hours long and look nice, there's nothing quite like kicking back with a game like Persona 4. Only sad thing is that it makes you wonder why games now are generally a bit guff.

It would be interesting to know what sorts of games are being made in these other markets. Who knows what classic games might have been created.

Not really surprised. For one thing, when you buy a PS2 game, it's complete, in the box, requires no patching and hasn't had half the content locked away to be sold back to the gamer as overpriced DLC. Also, the entire back-catalogue doesn't consist of generic, grey first-person shooters either.

It's probably why I still have far more fun with my PS2 than I do with my PS3.

My PS2 has been getting a lot of love the past couple of months, so it's nice to read that others appreciate the quality it has on offer. There really has been no better system that offers such value and diversity in it's titles. I went to Germany recently and they still sell new PS2's there. Since it's a PAL model I picked up a shiny new super-slim and have stored it in the attic, still sealed, for one of my future children to open within the next 10 years. If gaming is heading in the direction I think it is, I'll shed a tear when it's finally opened and I get to re-experience the golden age of gaming where creativity was the first rule for developers.

PS2 certainly had the games, although in my heart of heart, I prefer the Nintendo Gamecube in the last gen. Sadly, its superior technical specs and controls, together with games like RE 0, Remake, Zero, Zelda Wind Waker, Killer 7, Metroid, twin snakes; were never gonna be enough, as people like soulless stuff like GTA.

Because you always say positive things regarding Sony right? It will take a a long time for any console to match, let alone surpass the achievements of the PS2 so your dicky comments warrant the negs. Go masterbate in the Microsoft corner please.

The PS2 will go down in history as the greatest console the gaming community has ever known. I've had my PS2 for 9 years now and have roughly 5 times as many games for it as my 360 in second place(PS3 a close third), that would be about 240 games.

They're just so damn cheap, whenever i go into gamestop they have so many i can buy 10 or 20 games at a time, and they're all ones that are good!

Wasn't "Gran Tusirsmo 4" a later and much improved version of the original "Gran Turismo 4"?

;-)

Had a PS2 night the other weekend and invited some mates over. They all have PS3s, XBox 360s and Nintentos, so they were like "You wot?! PS2 night?!"

But they soon shut up as we got around the multitap to some classis PES6, Shox (a very underrated SEGA game), Quake III, Black, GT4, Burnout series, Smuggler's Run 2 etc. In short, they loved it and there were NO COMPLAINTS!

Just proves that the old dog still has much more life in it still. I'm looking for a copy of Fahrenheit to buy at the moment.

Gosh. That's more than N64, Gamecube and Wii combined. Twice as much as XBox and XBox 360 combined.

PS1-PS3 combined sold twice as much as their Nintendo rivals.

This really puts some things in perspective.

Looks like I'm a little bit late to this party, but I'll comment anyway.

I was thinking only a few days ago how I actually play the PS2 and original Xbox more than I currently play my PS3. So many classic games for those older consoles, and at such cheap prices too if you pick them up pre-owned. I've just bought Silent Hill 2, 3 and 4, so no doubt the PS3 will remain neglected for some time yet.

I honestly feel that Sony made a huge mistake not making all PS3s compatible with PS2 games. It's probably deliberate due to the fact the the PS2 is still selling fairly well considering it's 10 years old.

^ Or the costs of the emotion engine were too much to sustain in PS3 consoles past launch date. They really were losing money out the asshole at that point.

^ Not funny. Sega helped consoles games evolve just like Nintendo although obviously on a lower scale. I don't think "gaming" itself would not be here if it wasn't for Nintendo, as there were consoles before Nintendo and PC games were popular before Nintendo as well. It would surely be different that's for sure.

@MattDamon

You really are a twat. The PS2 launched at £300+ which was very high for a console in 2000 and sold shit loads consistently. Sales only slowed down once the PS3 launched. It's a home console, not a handheld. It's sold more than the original Xbox, Xbox 360, Gamecube and the PS3 COMBINED. You compare home consoles to home consoles. Similarly, you compare handhelds to handhelds because devices can only compete with other devices that are in direct competition with each other.

If you are really going to be an idiot, why don't we compare the 360 to the PS2? At the same point in its life, the PS2 had sold 100 million+. The 360 has just reached half that number, whilst the PS3 is approaching it fast. The Wii has sold 80 million+ but even that has sold just over half the amount of total PS2 sales. The only difference is that after 5 years on sale, demand for the Wii has dwindled big time whilst the PS2 was still selling like crazy at the same point in its life.

In fact, nobody gave a shit about the individual numbers until you joined the thread. Instead of commending what is without a doubt one of the greatest, if not THE greatest consoles of all time, you come out with some of the most retarded shit I ever had the misfortune of reading. I don't know which brand you've pledged your loyalty to or why, but it's a stupid thing to do. Whether you like Sony or not, you cannot fault them for ushering in a new era for video games. Without them we'd probably still be playing the SNES with no Sega, Sony, or MS consoles to compete and be told that "cartridges are the future of gaming" or some shit like that.

Nothing you say can change the stone cold fact that the PS2 is the most successful console of all time. Not only that, but gamers have pretty much crowned it the greatest console in existence. You will not find such quality and diversity ANYWHERE on ANY OTHER console.
