REGIMENT DES ZOUAVES PONTIFICAUX CANADIENS

The last member of the Zouaves who saw active service in defence of the Holy See

Of the over 300 Zouaves Pontificaux Canadien only seven came from Ontario, the rest came from Quebec. One out of every sixteen were of Irish or Scot origins. The Regiment was paid for by donations raised throughout Quebec and Ontario.

Hugh Murray, an Irish Quebecer, nephew of Bishop Horan of Kingston, Ontario, joined the Zouaves (French Military) in 1861. Murray was the second Canadian Zouave. It was not until after the Battle of Mentana on Nov. 3 1867, where Murray and another Canadian, Alfred Larocque were injured, that the Zouave movement took off in Quebec.

These medals, awarded to a Canadian Zouave, are presently in the collection of the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa. The first medal is the Canada General Service Medal (Fienian Raid Medal).
