The American far-right's top 10 paranoid conspiracy theories

Chemtrails, HAARP and the North American Union - inside the paranoid world of America's far-right conspiracy theories

Cross of vapour trails
Harmless vapour trails left by planes? That's what they want you to think, sheeple

The Southern Poverty Law Centre has done important work in exposing the most dangerous fringes of the US far right for many years. Now it's collected 10 of the right's most popular and bizarre conspiracy theories – all of which would be simply hilarious if it wasn't for the fact that some of these people have lots of guns.

A few of the theories will be familiar: that 9/11 was an "inside job" by the government, for example, while the North American Free Trade Agreement is but a stepping stone to a North American Union between the US, Canada and Mexico. But others on the list are more exotic and unfamiliar to those outside the feverish world of patriotic militias.

Take "chemtrails" for example. According to the SPLC's Intelligence Report writer Alexander Zaitchik:

Few Internet-age anti-government conspiracies have spread as quickly or as widely as the idea of "chemtrails": the belief that air and water vapor contrails that form in the wake of high-altitude aircraft are really clouds of toxic soup being deliberately sprayed by hundreds, if not thousands, of secret government planes executing the designs of the New World Order.

Now that's a fantastic conspiracy theory. But not as good as the UN's sinister "population control" plans:

One Patriot theory says the United Nations wants to create a "biosphere" out of most of the United States, and that eliminating the humans who put pressure on the environment will be a necessary first step.

Then there's HAARP – the High-frequency Active Auroral Research Programme, a joint scientific research project of the Air Force and Navy, based in Alabama. It really exists. But what is it for, exactly?

To the conspiracy-minded, HAARP is a government program tasked with creating secret directed-energy weapons, instruments for weather and mind control, and even potent new methods to cause earthquakes. Predictably, after January's devastating earthquake in Haiti, some Patriot sites noted that the neighboring Dominican Republic was undamaged, leading them to speculate that the US government was responsible and had targeted Haiti alone.

Excuse me while I go and convert my worthless fiat US dollars into gold, in order to purchase a tinfoil hat.

Which conspiracy theory explains the sheer idiocy of the far right in the USA? They can't all have been dropped on their heads by nefarious communist childminders.

I'm not sure these conspiracy theories are confined to the far-right, certainly the 9/11 conspiracy is held by people on the left as well. I don't think lunacy is along party lines.

Yes, because literally no-one with left leaning politics espoused the notion that the Neo-Cons were behind 9/11...

This sort of article is, to my mind, unhelpful. Stop trying to turn literally everything into a Right vs Left battleground. The bottom line is that, regardless of their politics, some people are credulous naifs. Mewling "Look at the silly right wingers" whilst staying deliberately blinkered to the fact that the far (and not so far) left are equally as divorced from reality just makes you look partisan. You know, partisan; the thing that the left often correctly accuses the right of being in the US?

As terence mckenna once said about the US government 'They cant even knock off a loudmouth in baghdad let alone conquer space travel'

I see similarities between this tripe and some of the stuff the BNP are into. I think its uneducated, testosterone fuelled reasoning for things that have a rational explanation, if you bother to look for it. Its the desire for the alpha male to be responsible for things that you are afraid of, like natural disasters.

Tell me how the US government, the most indebted government in known human history, is going to maintain total domination over a populace of over 300 million people who are armed and dislike them, then implement the same thing across the world, including Russia and China? The most brainwashed nation in the world? yes i think so.

Relatively sane when compared to an even wider-spread belief
That Sarah Palin is a Messianic future American Chief.................

People don't subscribe to conspiracy theories for no reason. It is another symptom of our broken governments/societies. We know we are being lied to, we know we are being brainwashed, we know we are not free. What we don't know is the truth, we can guess, but we're going to get it wrong as often as not.
I think most people believe 9/11 could be an inside job.
I don't subscribe to the small group of sinister people controlling the planet theories but it does seem clear that the greedy and powerful have enough influence and control to generally get what they want. The gap between rich and poor keeps growing despite the majority being consistently against it, for instance.

I fail to see how this kind of article is helpful in any manner at all? it is easy to dismiss people who question by labeling them as people who wear tin foil hats. That's just very a very infantile approach. If you disagree with Chemtrails, or if you disagree with the assertion that the Federal Reserve is at the heart of all things economically (and politically) bad, then present a case. Why state your case. It seems like an article (well it's not really an article now is it) attracts a crowd that are scared of even considering the possibility that is credible evidence to things like....
    1. 9/11 as a false flag
    2. Chemtrails,
    3. Oklahoma City as a false flag

We already know and it has been admitted that the Gulf of Tonkin was a false flag and what the heck, only 50K plus soldiers died. Yet, the big defense contractors made billions.

We already know that the big banks funded both sides of WWII. Hundreds of thousands died but the banks made millions.

I agree with Lightbelm .......if you can only see the world in a two dimensional right vs left paradigm then you're destined to stay ignorant about what might really be going on around you.
    Might I suggest, http://www.projectcamelot.info

I'm not advocating any point of view here in this comment, just encouraging people to have a commitment to truth above ideology with the courage to look at all information with open eyes and think for themselves and not be swayed by what anyone else suggests.

Are you getting paid to write this stuff, Richard Adams? If so, the Guardian can certainly find another way to spend its money, for example, they might pay someone to do some real research and analysis.

    Here's a link to an article about the CIA and US Governments experiments with Dengue Fever in the Florida Keys;
    http://www.truth- out.org/florida- dengue-fever- outbreak- leads-back- cia-and-army- experiments61565

    Here's a link to a site which gives significant information, carefully researched, about Chemtrails, also called Aerosol Crimes;
    http://www.carnicom.com/

The HAARP program is not only fully functional for many years, official information about it is readily available on the web. Further, there is an article on Radio Free Europe in which Russians are wondering out loud whether the US is responsible for the strange weather lately.

Upon further thought, I think you should trade in the tin foil hat for a dunce cap.
    Let's consider 9/11.
I've thought this through myself (and thinking things through for oneself is something I'm thinking you support) and here are my conclusions and in summary I'm suspicious about the official explanation, hence I do not accept the official explanation hook, line, sinker and tin foil hat. Why?

Bin Laden has never been charged with the crime.
There has never been a trial.
    The 9/11 commission didn't explain building 7
Some of the alleged hijackers are still alive.
9/11 commission omitted testimony from Siebel Edmunds. Why?
The CIA has admitted making fake Bin Laden videos.
There was no visible plane in the video of the pentagon.
9/11 commission omitted other testimony regarding explosions going off in the building before the planes crashed.
It looks like there is molten metal spewing from WTC but no explanation (official that is) has been given.

So if you're going to tell me that I have a tin foil hat on then what is your explanation for the events of 9/11 and what is your evidence?
All I'm saying is that there is reason to question and have doubt about the official story. So what!

The official story just doesn't smell right.

Now if you want to buy the official story as told then that is your choice and it is a choice I respect and in spite of an overwhelming desire to do so, I won't label you as an ignorant idiot. It is your right to hold any belief that you want.

From your blog, it just happens to look like you're more in love with your ideology then you are with really getting to the truth about anything. You're more interested in labeling people and putting them into an easily categorized and referenced cubby hole because you are afraid and fearful and for this I do pity you.

    And so, the troofers arive....

Not as many as usual mind. How come? Have they all lost interest and joined the tea party or something?

Anyhoo just to say that accepting any of the theories I'd broadly group under the Loose Change flag does seem to need a bigger suspension of disbelief than the official version requires. Just because one side is lying, doesn't necessarily follow that the other side is telling the truth,

Here's the rea; story on the reckless right in the US:

    1. They are masters at controlling what the media report. All news media follow up on lies told by Fox News as if they are real stories to be debated.

    2. They have appropriated the concept of "Patriot." Only right wingers can be patriots. Moderate generals like Colin Powell are under the suspicion of being traitors.

    3. They have appropriated the Constitution, claiming to defend it while reducing it to an ignorant fundamentalism (leaving out phrases and later amendments). They have reduced it o a series of Sharia like rules which only they can interpret. Not surprisingly, the Constitution supposedly enshrines radical laissez faire capitalism.

    4. They are taking over the Catholic Church in order to cleanse it of its social teachings and bias for the poor. The head of Fox News is an ultra right wing Catholic convert, as is Newt Gingrinch. Most white Catholics are now Republicans, and many believe Obama was not born in the US and is a Muslim. Only a few years ago few believed this, and they voted for Obama. Catholics are increasingly believing the same political lies as fundamentalist Protestants.

    5. The right wing republican leadership in Congress have let the business establishment know that it must not support in any way pro-business legislation initiated by Obama or the Democrats. Business, cocky about calling the shots, now realizes that the mean little politicians they helped to create may become their masters.

    6. They are winning the propaganda law, relentlessly attacking ANYTHING the Democrats do or say, while always supporting right wingers, even when they lie or spew racist comments.

    7. Right wing populism is supported by corporate lobbyists as a way to win middle class voters to believe in absolute property rights over human rights, and to the sacred doctrine that government has no business assisting people to overcome poverty or financial distress.

    8. They label European social capitalism/social democracy as socialism and fascism, claiming the governments own and control all industry. Most Americans believe this. They believe that a republican form of government, by its nature, cannot implement social democratic policies. All non-laissez faire policies are acts of treason.

    9. They assert that the US is, by law, a Christian nations and should be ruled only by Christians and that the US should promote Christianity around the world.

10, A very large number want to promote a war between Israel and the Arab states in order to usher in the battle of God and Magog and the Apocalypse. part of this strategy is to stir up anti-Islamic hatred in the US.

Remember, nearly a majority of Americans now reject evolution and believe the world is only 6000 years old. A majority believe that the anti-scientific "intelligent design theory" (with no empirical evidence) is as valid as the Theory of Evolution (with a huge amount of empirical evidence). The TV preachers rant about the Illuminati promoting socialism and that they have taken over Europe and now want to take over the US and persecute Christians.

Do not underestimate them. They are Neo-Confederates determined to take over and undo all progressive and New Deal Legislation, including labor laws and Social Security. They are winning the propaganda war.

What is your source for saying that a majority of Americans reject evolution and why would you say that intelligent design is anti-scientific? I don't even know what that means?
So much of this is just cocktail party philosophy.
Who is it that asserts that by law the US is a Christian nation? Where?
    Can you site a source?
A large number want to promote between Israel and the Arab states. What is your source.
You must be related to the blog author. No facts, just worthless dribble that does not contribute to the discussion and does not get anyone closer to the truth.

Your feeling very sleepy, when I count to 3 you'll be asleep..1-2-3...Sleep

    1. Everything is OK, the monopoly media tells you so, so it just is.

    2. Do not question anything, only the insane question things, just believe what you are told.

    3. You have not just been robbed blind to bail out a manufactured banking collapse.

    4. 911 was masterminded by a shape shifting caveman from Saudi Arabia and carried out by re-incarnating Arabs. The logical action was to invade Iraq and Afghanistan. This had nothing to do with oil or global hegemony.

    5. Terrorists, criminals and paedos are everywhere. Giving up your freedoms is good, your government will protect you, just pay more taxes. We we will look after you and your children as you're not capable of doing it yourself.

    6. The UN has your interests at heart, do not worry about Agenda 21.

    7. Global Warming is real, your friendly UN think-tank The Club of Rome didn't say “The common enemy of humanity is man. In searching for a new enemy to unite us, we came up with the idea that pollution, the threat of global warming, water shortages, famine and the like would fit the bill. All these dangers are caused by human intervention, and it is only through changed attitudes and behavior that they can be overcome. The real enemy then, is humanity itself."

    8. Do not worry about the stuff sprayed in the skys that merges into clouds, ignore the fact that contrails did not do this 15-20 years ago.

    9. Now go fetch yourself a beer, switch on the TV, forget those insanse conspiracies and watch Pop Idol or Eastenders and stay asleep, we're here to think for you.

This article might carry some value were it to explain why such theories are the stuff of fantasy. Or are we to believe this simply because you say so and you write for the Guardian?

We dont know all the answers, but we do know that what we are being told is not the truth. So we read, think, listen, reflect and try to learn what is really happening.

Sure not everything conspiracy is true, but the evidence many people have uncovered would suggest it is folly to simply condemn such theories to ridicule.

Look into it and make up your own mind. Dont let others impose their "truth" on you.

    What a lame article indeed......
Sticks and stones mate, facts are still facts....
Building 7 still came down in 6 seconds, not hit by a plane, no matter what spin you put on it, and the ONLY rational explanation for this if it was brought down in a controlled demolition, as agreed by over 1300 architects and engineers and Architects and Engineers for 9/11 truth who have all signed a petition calling for a new investigation.

I am unsure on the others however...I find the Bilderberg club strange, and it is real and is barely spoken about, as is Bohemian Grove, a boys club in the woods in California where all kinds of odd stuff takes place, attended by prominent, powerful people....

But you are right I am sure.
Of course highly rich, powerful people don't meet in secret and plan things...
And there is a man hiding in a cave somewhere evading the world's most advanced military, releasing his video tapes taunting us with his evil plots....who managed to get the entire US Air defence to stand down for the day on September 11th 2001.
And of course they found one of the terrorist's passports in the rubble of the twin towers...
    I'll go back to sleep...
Smear tactics won't work anymore pal, the cat is out of the bag, thanks largely to the internet.
    Make your own mind up.
Google video-ZERO-An investigation into 9/11 and 9/11 press for truth (made by the victim's families)-Are they "paranoid conspiracy theorists too?" Shame on you.
Watch these and then see if you think something is up, as millions worldwide now do.
Ask yourself why millions would believe something is up.....may have something to do with the fact that something is.
The credibility of the mainstream media is shot with their stubborn refusal to address and seriously investigate things like 9/11.......
Hope the pay cheque is worth it.....
In the meantime we can just read piffle like this from Richard Adams.....

More lame lazy smug 'journalism' from the guardian. If you did the slightest bit of research you would realise that what you (Richard Adams) are saying is making YOU look like an uninformed fantasist.

What it has to do with the 'far-right' is further evidence of your lack of knowledge.

What is happening in reality is that more and more people are begging to wake up to the deception and lies piled upon us by the governments and more significantly the mega rich private bankers. Your attempt to fit in with the generally accepted ideas of the public is almost desperate - you don't even offer any support for your words - you just expect people to swallow it whole - like you apparently have. The government like that in people.

One last thing - do you see nothing wrong with the 3% richest people in the world owning something like 95% of the worlds financial wealth? Nothing? Guardian journalist?

    Bah.

    Heres my top conspiracy theory

    1. The guardian newspaper isnt really a propaganda outlet, but is actually a genuine newspaper with objective investigative reporting.

I know, i know, only a nutter would believe this. But do you realise there are actually sad people that think that the rag is a newspaper, and read it for news every day? Yeah i know, i found it hard to believe to. But i swear these people exist. They even base their daily lives on what the paper tells them.

    Amazing. But true.

try doing some real investigating and journalism on 9/11,you may learn something.

Oh no they would never spray people with chemicals , or test on the public.

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/2254664.stm

The Ministry of Defence turned large parts of the country into a giant laboratory to conduct a series of secret germ warfare tests on the public.

A government report just released provides for the first time a comprehensive official history of Britain's biological weapons trials between 1940 and 1979.

Many of these tests involved releasing potentially dangerous chemicals and micro-organisms over vast swaths of the population without the public being told.

Do journalists actually do any of this anymore, or do they just repeat what the government says (or tells them too, paid talking heads).

    Regarding Chemtrails?
I obviously don't have any direct, 1st hand evidence that we're being sprayed like cattle. There is a rather well done documentary on the subject if anyone is interested. The filmmakers, Clifford Carnicom who lived in New Mexico started out with an observation that there seemed to be an observable difference vapor trails and these other trails. So, he went on somewhat of a mission to try and discover what was really going and to a large extent this film is about his quest for more information and how his efforts were stonewalled at pretty much every juncture. I refer to this movie, since it is the 1st tin foil hat conspiracy Mr. Adams sites in his piece. It would be easy to dismiss chemical spraying of humans if there wasn't already evidence of the use of chemical dispersal by the military. Can anyone say Agent Orange? I know that this was a defoliant, but the entire exercise over the course of Vietnam provided valuable experience and learning regarding the entire chemical spraying process. So, personally, when I look in the skies, I agree with Mr. Carnicom and believe my eyes and it makes me question. Anyway, watch the film and draw your own conclusions.
It's called "Chemtrails Real, or Not" Here's the link.
    http://projectcamelot.info/1082/chem-trails-real-or-not/

PS: I find it somewhat curious that Mr. Adams has not posted any sort of reply in defense of his piece. Not that there's much original thinking in his writing. I mean all he really is doing is citing other sources. Would really like Mr. Adams to give his thoughts about his piece. Share with us why he wrote it, why he believes what he wrote..............................................I invite him to join the discussion - which is what we should be having.

A better world is what we all want. Regardless of where we place ourselves on the political compass. There really is a very thin line between what the different opinions expressed here - if we collectively have the courage to face our own truth outside of what anyone else may recommend. Let me elaborate on my thinking and do within the content of 9/11.

I think it is safe to say that one element, one aspect that would be a component of a better world would be a world that has a higher quotient of truth telling (and of course less lies). If you can just imagine a world where it was the rule rather then the exception that truth be told, then what would we have?

Well the first thing that comes to my mind would be a world based on trust rather then fear. So in the context of 9/11, unless you are completely, 100% in support of the official myth of 19 guys, directed by someone in a cave got on board 4 commercial airlines, took over the plane and with exactly zero experience flying commercial jets, we're able to turn the planes around and steer them into the site of the twin towers and in the case of the pentagon do a complete 270 degree(I believe it is) turn and then skim the ground at over 500 mph, precisely crash into the pentagon and not make a hole in the building wider then 50 ft and....................that the entire plane vaporized, leaving zero luggage, seats or anything else. If you really believe this with all your heart and soul and believe it to be the 100% truth then I guess nothing I, or anyone else might say would sway you.

However, if you don't think that the 'official' story is "THE STORY" is "THE EXPLANATION" then you are implicitly in favor of more truth. That is really any person who is in doubt of the official story is asking for- truth! I don't think it matters if you're on the political left, or right, I think that you are likely to agree that more truth would equal a better world because what would (in the case of 9//11) happen to the world if all the people who even had the slightest bit of doubt about the official story, got together and said; "Lets dig a little deeper" and supported a complete, impartial (non government controlled) investigation. ? Well we'd either find that we had been lied to, or we'd find that we hadn't been lied to. If we find out that we hadn't been lied to well, then I guess we'd all get on board with the program. However, if the truth got told....and we found that we had been lied to? Hm? How would the world change? (partial list)
    1. How about less murder.
    2. How about less deformed babies being born in Iraq, or anywhere else where depleted uranium munitions had been used.
    3. How about a dismantling of the Patriot and Military commissions act.
    4. How about a restoration of the ability to take pictures of your child in front of a government building without being harassed by the local constable.
    6.. How about healthier food.
    7. How about less corruption.
    8. How about more money in your pocket.
    9. How about more trust.

I could go on and on and on and on, but the moral of the story is that a better world has to be based on trust. A trust in each other and a trust in the institutions that govern society and the only way to get there (in my oh so humble though wordy opinion) has to start with truth. That is all anyone who you call a truffer wants! Answers to questions. I fail to see how this kind of desire might be cast in a right vs left paradigm. I think we all want this and if that is true, then on some level we're all truffers.

(Pardon any misspellings, or grammatical errors, as I choose not to edit this post and let the thoughts fly).

    CONSPIRACY?

A Fast-Paced Science Fiction Thriller Set During One of History’s Most Significant Events -- The Assassination of John F. Kennedy

John Michael Patrick delivers an action-packed and provocative sci-fi thriller in Conspiracy?

It’s the early 90s and John and Tammy are a young couple who’ve got it all—successful careers and a wonderful life together.

The two decide to celebrate one night after John receives a great job offer that puts him at the top of his computer career. On their way downtown, a thunderstorm springs up and lightening surrounds their car. A high piercing noise nearly deafens them and a brilliant light surrounds their car. The couple are knocked unconscious.

When they awaken, they find themselves in Dallas, Texas in the turbulent 1960s. The two began a race against time to stop Lee Harvey Oswald before he kills the President. John is prepared to kill Oswald before he delivers the fatal shot to Kennedy, but is there a second gunman? Perhaps the reputed shooter behind the grassy knoll? Armed with a video camera, they record evidence that shows that Oswald did not act alone

But the Feds and local authorities don’t want to hear what they have to say or see the evidence they have—they suspect John and Tammy have something to do with the murder and the two are on the run before being captured, arrested, and convicted.

Although evidence points to them being involved, other clues show the impossibility of their having anything to do with the crime. Will they be convicted of a crime they couldn’t have possibly committed? Can they prove their conspiracy theory to the authorities, and can they ever return home again?

Blending sci-fi thrills and historical narration, Patrick’s novel is like a freight train—a nonstop ride with twists and turns that takes the reader from the computer age of the 1990s to the turbulent 1960s. The result is a wonderfully captivating and satisfying read.

You forgot to mention those other ridiculous conspiracy theories:

    1) there are no weapons of mass destruction in IRAQ

    2) There is no secret society of elite called the Bilderbergs

    3) Bernanke did not funnel a trillions dollars to undisclosed sources

    4) the Guardian.co.uk is not a band of "bought men" of the elite

    5) your brothers at News Corp are not Fair and Balanced

Boy. what some sheeple are willing to believe!!!

I find that people who use the term "sheeple" tend to be assholes. Conspiracy?

The thing that gets me about almost all conspiracy theories is that they tend to be based a fear of hugely powerful groups that are beyond the control of individuals.

People like the 'troofers' and the chemtrails chaps do a great job in making all political protest and criticism look foolish.

The strange thing is that we live in an era where there is so much that is wrong in the world without resorting to conspiracy theories.

Maybe the real truth is that the biggest conspiracy theory is the existence of so many conspiracy theories.

Or maybe the real truth is that conspiracy theorists are scared of the world outside and prefer to remain passive rather than looking at the real problems in the world and actually getting off their arses and doing something about it.
