The Independent Veterinarians’ Working Group (IVWG) on the Canadian Harp Seal Hunt was formed in May 2005 to contribute to the promotion of animal welfare, and to minimize or eliminate animal suffering within the context of the hunt.

The Group is composed of nine veterinarians from North America and Europe who have a wide range of experience and knowledge relating specifically to the Canadian harp seal hunt, the health and welfare of seals and other marine mammals, and animal welfare in general.

The group met in Halifax, Nova Scotia, May 26-28, 2005 to receive information from sealers and regulators, and to discuss the hunt in camera. The outcome of those deliberations is a report that provides recommendations to industry and regulators.
