Choosing the Right Open Source Product: Don't
Leave it to Chance
As open source use in your organization moves
from an informal, tactical initiative to a central part of
your IT infrastructure, it's no longer enough to rely on hearsay
to decide which products to use.
The key issue for mainstream IT organizations
regarding open source is to assess which are the right products
to solve their problems. It's important that these decisions
use a structured process to objectively perform assessments
-- a process that evaluates open source products in all critical
dimensions: software, support, documentation, training, integration,
and service availability. Only with a complete evaluation
tool can you be confident you are choosing the right products
for your organization.
The Open Source Maturity Model™ (OSMM)
is a formal process to assess the maturity level of open source
software. Developed by Navica, the OSMM is itself open source,
freely available for any organization to use in their open
source work.
Here's what one well-known analyst firm said
about the OSMM:
"The Open Source Maturity
Model is by far the easiest to use and the best documented" |
