Nedap Elections Systems

Lately the Nedap voting machines are rather hot news. It is good to note that the citizens appear to be that involved in the integrity of elections. This is of benefit to the democracy in the Netherlands.

To put the discussions on this in the right perspective Nedap, as an interested party, thinks it is relevant to know the following:

Why do voting machines exist?

Voting machines were introduced in the Netherlands in the late sixties of the past century to improve the integrity of the elections.

It is generally accepted that counting a large number of paper ballots always leads to different results.

How does the voting machine improve the integrity of elections?

·          Making preferences unambiguously: the voter makes less unaware mistakes when selecting his preference

·          Elimination of counting errors: see Florida USA, presidential elections 2000 Al Gore vs. George W. Bush, and recently the presidential elections in Mexico.

What is the Nedap voting machine?

The Nedap voting machine is a simple electronic “counting device”, no more, no less.

As with “paper” elections the election process with Nedap voting machines is embedded in a similar organisation and similar procedures with respect to care, supervision and guarantees.

Is manipulation possible with the Nedap voting machine?

Everything can be manipulated.

Is the Nedap voting machine secured against deliberate manipulation?

Yes, measures are taken against every new threat.

Can the result of the Nedap voting machine be manipulated?

This is much more difficult than with “paper” elections.

It is our experience that in the past 40 years in which voting machines are used the government has taken its responsibility with regard to safeguarding the integrity of elections.
