Alâiye Beys

Alâiye Beys had dominated in Alaiye (alanya) firstly as a branch of Karamanogullari principality, and then they lived under the domination of the Mameluke State. The rumour stating that the founders of this principality were rooted from the sons of the daughter of Seljuk sultan has not been proved yet. Alaiye was conquered by Seljuk sultan Ala ed-Din Keykubad in the year of 1223. In the last years of Turkey Seljuks State, Alaiye had been captured by Mecdeddin Mahmud from Karamanogullari principality (1293). Afterwards, the beys connected to Karamanogullari principality had started to dominate in the aforesaid city.

The domination of Karamanogullari principality in this city continued in the second half of thecnetury XIV. As a matter of fact, the Cyprus king Pierre tried to capture Alaiye in the year of 1266, but the help of Karamanogullari principality provided the maintenance of the city under the domination of Turks.

Karaman b. Savcý sold the city of Alaiye to the Mameluke State in return for five thousands golds in the year of 1427. Afterwards, the grandchildren of Karamanoglu Mahmud Bey dominated in the aforesaid under the sovereignty of Mameluke State. As a result, Gedik Ahmet Pasha captured Alaiye and annexed it to the lands of the Ottoman State (1471).

Alâiye had been a busy market place and the exportation of timber had had an important place in the trade sector. There were shipbuilding yards in the city that built ships. Due to trade, Alaiye beys were rich and the financial situation of the people was in a good state.
