IRON MAIDEN Bassist Talks About His Technique And Influences - Sep. 24, 2004
IRON MAIDEN founding member Steve Harris is featured in the "Legends of Rock Bass" issue of Bass Player magazine. The focus of the interview is mainly on Steve's technique and influences. A couple of excerpts follow:

Bass Player: Is there any particular reason why you’ve never done bass solos onstage?

Steve Harris: "Because they're bloody boring, that’s why. In all they years I've been seing bands, there have been only three bassists who played interesting solos: Billy Sheehan, Rinus Gerritsen of GOLDEN EARRING, and Hellmut Hattler of the German cult band KRAAN. Billy Sheehan's playing is outrageously different."

Bass Player: There are quite a lot of changes and different sections in some of MAIDEN's songs.

Steve Harris: "Oh yeah — that's the influence coming in from YES, GENESIS, PINK FLOYD, JETHRO TULL, that sort of stuff. We wanted to incorporate those time changes, plus the heaviness of BLACK SABBATH and DEEP PURPLE with a bit of ZEPPELIN thrown in, and the harmony guitars of WISHBONE ASH as well. But when you're playing, you get to the point where you don’t even have to think about it. When you start thinking about what you're doing, that's when you make mistakes. If you start thinking, 'Oh blimey – what's that bit coming up next?' Then it's already gone and you've buggered it. It's all very well saying you'd like things perfect, but everyone makes mistakes."

I come on here day after day and read the things you people say and all you do is make fun or assume things about msucians that none of you have even met and it makes me sick. You posted 'that they suck donkey cock and so do their fans'

You do realize you are doing the same thing you're chastising everyone else for? And that you are oversimplifying by saying that EVERYONE on this board makes gross assumptions about musicians they don't know, etc.

You are entitled to your opinion, but if you are going to be insulting, by calling people stupid, or saying they suck donkey cock, you will incur their ire (which, as this board has no rules, you are also entitled to do). And it sounds like that was exactly what you intended.

So why are you surprised by the reaction you are now getting? You came on this thread w/ guns blazing ( Screaming Beaver: that's a metaphor, he doesn't have a gun. You can get out of from under your desk) and people responded in kind. Now you sound like you are hurt or upset by it. Surely, you didn't expect people to greet your comments w/mirth, did you?

Iron Maiden was influenced by all those bands Steve mentioned when they started out. Cliff Burton (RIP) could not have influenced them before he was even thinking about playing bass. Maiden was before Metallica.

Cliff Burton is truely missed in the Metal world.

is truly one of the best bass player/bandleader/songwriter in "the metal world". And to the people who go on and on about "how great they used to be..", Dance of the Death is one of their best albums ever! If it was reliesed in the 80´ies, everyone would probably have loved it.
Someone mentioned John Entwistle here. Did you know he´s the father of "heavy metal"?
He invented some technic or something that Hendrix, Clapton and others picked up, then Sabbath etc. etc.

Weather you like this band or sit around and make lame labels like "nu-metal" because you're a fucking queer there's one thing that rains true through everything, even to all those "extreme metal fans" with human crap on their chins...

...IRON MAIDEN OWNS YOU.

That's right. Next to Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden is the best metal band ever. Steve Harris is so cool cause he didn't sink to the level of Limp Bizkit. He's even better because he didn't dig past that and sign up with some bowel cancer patient set to music.

For those of you saying that somehow Steve Harris couldn't "Hold his own on his own" has the bass EVER been a soloing instrument? No. Why? Because it's fucking boring. The bass is there to hold things down.

Steve Harris REVOLUTIONIZED bass playing, in my opinion. Listen to the first three records. He's playing the guitar lines note for note, in fact, often times (such as in To Tame a Land) he's playing the riff, while the guitars are playing the "backing" that the bass normally would play. The three finger gallop is one of the most commonly heard metal elements heard today. Everyone tried to copy Maiden, and you'd be hard-pressed today to find a band that wasn't influenced by Maiden, or influenced by someone who was heavily influneced by Maiden.

Oh yeah. And Steve Harris is GOD! Fuck you dumbass literalists.
