THE EBB-TIDE |
$ 275.00 |
|
Stevenson, Robert Louis and Osbourne, Lloyd. THE EBB-TIDE. A Trio and Quartette. London: William Heinemann, 1894. 20 pp ads dated August 1894. Original (smooth) bronze cloth pictorially decorated in black.
Larger picture
First English Edition of this novel Stevenson co-wrote with his stepson. The English edition was published two months after the Chicago one. This copy is bound in smooth bronze cloth, and has the rear cover device measuring 11/16-inch in diameter (some measure 3/4-inch). According to Carter, this smooth bronze cloth, with August 1894 ad catalogue, is one of the two primary binding states (there is also a pebbled bronze cloth, and a presumably-later smooth light brown cloth). This is a near-fine copy (a few small dents in the front cover, light rubbing at the extremities) of this attractively-bound book. Beinecke 602-605 (none of these four is quite the same as this copy); Princeton 56A, copy 1; Carter BV p. 155.

FATHER DAMIEN |
$ 675.00 |
|
Stevenson, Robert Louis. FATHER DAMIEN. An Open Letter to the Reverend Doctor Hyde of Honolulu. London: Chatto and Windus, 1890. Original brown wrappers.
Larger picture
First Trade Edition, consisting of 1,000 copies (preceded by 25 copies issued in Sydney and 30 issued in Edinburgh). On the Stevensons' voyage to the South Pacific they had visited the leper colony on Molokai, founded by Dr. Damien (who had himself died of leprosy the year before they arrived). A missionary named Hyde had written a recent letter denouncing Damien; this piece is Stevenson's open reply to Hyde, which Stevenson boasted of as being blatantly libellous.
This is a near-fine copy of this fragile piece (very slight edgewear to the wrapper). Beinecke 510; Princeton 44B.

AN INLAND VOYAGE |
$ 750.00 |
|
a fine copy of the first American edition of Stevenson's first book
Stevenson, Robert Louis. AN INLAND VOYAGE. Boston: Roberts Brothers, 1883. 10 pp undated ads. Original bright green cloth decorated in black and gilt.
Larger picture
First American Edition of Stevenson's first book (published five years after the London edition). Stevenson's third book, TRAVELS WITH A DONKEY, was published in 1879 both in London and in Boston -- making it Stevenson's first book to appear in America.
This copy is bound in bright green cloth (decorated with black lines and a front cover vignette in gilt). Although this is the only color referred to in both the Beinecke and the Parrish collections, we have seen it also in olive-brown, terra-cotta and aqua blue (presumably no priority). This is an unusually fine, bright copy, essentially without soil or wear at all and with the cover gilt remarkably bright. We have not had a better copy. Beinecke 14; Princeton 6B.

ISLAND NIGHTS' ENTERTAINMENTS |
$ 275.00 |
|
Stevenson, Robert Louis. ISLAND NIGHTS' ENTERTAINMENTS. Consisting of The Beach of Falesa / The Bottle Imp / The Isle of Voices. With Illustrations by Gordon Browne and W. Hatherell. London Paris & Melbourne: Cassell & Company, 1893. 16 pp ads dated Mar 1893. Original blue-grey cloth pictorially decorated in gilt.
Larger picture
First English Edition, published five days after the American. "The Bottle Imp" is one of Stevenson's weirdest tales -- a supernatural blend of Aladdin's lamp, the monkey's paw, and a game of hot potato.
As with most (if not all) copies, the book's price on the preliminary ad leaf was raised by hand. Some copies have ads dated as early as Sept 1892; however, since the book wasn't published until early April 1893, we would regard the ads in this copy as "primary." This is a bright, near-fine copy (light bubbling of the cloth near the top of each cover, front endpaper cracking). Beinecke 577; Princeton 53A, copies 2-3.

KIDNAPPED |
$ 1350.00 |
|
Stevenson, Robert Louis. KIDNAPPED: being Memoirs of the Adventures of David Balfour in the Year 1751. [London:] Cassell & Company, 1886. 1 page undated ads plus 16 pp ads dated Apr 1886. Original terra-cotta cloth.
Larger picture
First Edition. In mid-18th Century Scotland, 17-year-old David Balfour is cheated out of his inheritance by a greedy uncle, who has him kidnapped and shipped to the Carolinas; with numerous challenges Balfour manages to get back to Scotland to fight to regain his property and his name. Stevenson began KIDNAPPED early in 1885 "partly as a lark, partly as a pot-boiler" (according to himself); he finished it in Spring 1886, having interrupted it part way through to write DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE. He had accepted Sidney Colvin's suggestion to cut short the novel and leave the rest for a sequel (which he did, with DAVID BALFOUR / CATRIONA, in 1893).
This is a copy of the first issue (with "name his business" on p. 40, "nine o'clock" on p. 64, and "Long Islands" on p. 101). The ads also are in the first (April) state (some first issue copies have the July ads that are present in the second issue). This copy's color is terra-cotta, one of several used without priority.
This is a very good copy (volume a bit askew, minor wear at the extremities). Beinecke 378; Princeton 31 (copies 1-4).

THE MASTER OF BALLANTRAE |
$ 675.00 |
|
Stevenson, Robert Louis. THE MASTER OF BALLANTRAE. A Winter's Tale. London, Paris, New York & Melbourne: Cassell & Company, 1889. 4 pp undated ads plus 16 pp ads dated July 1889. Original red cloth pictorially decorated in black.
Larger picture
First Edition (published on the day before the Scribner's one), with the proper July ads. Stevenson freely acknowledged that his inspiration for this book was Robert Marryat's THE PHANTOM SHIP (1839), which he had recently read. RLS began writing BALLANTRAE in Saranac Lake in 1887 but did not finish it until his first South Seas voyage in 1889.
The verso of this copy's front free endpaper lists twelve titles; some copies have a list of ten or fourteen (priority unknown). This is not a scarce book, but it usually turns up in miserable condition; this is an attractive, near-fine copy -- very faint cover soil, the volume slightly askew. The red cloth has retained its brightness better than most copies we have seen. Beinecke 487 (cites only a copy listing 14 titles); Princeton 41A (mentions copies with all three lists).
