When I began covering college women's lacrosse, Maryland owned the sport. The Terrapins were in the process of winning seven straight NCAA championships and I watched them win the last five, including a thrilling 14-13 overtime win against Georgetown in 2001. After that, the Terps fell off the pace. The sport grew and the talent pool spread all around the country. A new power rose at Northwestern and soon threatened to surpass the Terps' title streak. But in May, the Terps made sure that wouldn't happen.

Facing its first real challenge at the Federation of International Lacrosse Under-19 Women's World Championships, the United States used a five-goal second-half run to come from behind and beat Australia, 14-11, for its fourth straight title Saturday in Hanover, Germany. Covie Stanwick (Notre Dame Prep) and Cortney Fotunato scored two goals each, and Jen Cook (McDonogh) added a free-position goal with about 10 minutes left to polish off the five-goal spurt and give the U.S. a 12-8 lead.

When the United States Under-19 women's lacrosse team steps on the field Thursday for its opening game at the Federation of International Lacrosse world championships in Hanover, Germany, expectations will be high - and with good reason. The United States has won the last three Under-19 titles, hasn't lost a game during that stretch, and won the 1999, 2003 and 2007 championships by an average of 11.7 goals - all over Australia. The Aussies won the inaugural U-19 title, 5-4, in Haverford, Pa., in 1995, but that is the only game the U.S. has lost in the event's history.

When Dani Lazo first learned she would have the opportunity to play for the U.S. Under-19 women's lacrosse team in Germany this August, instead of just watching from the sidelines as a traveling alternate, her initial reaction wasn't one of excitement. Instead, the first thing Lazo felt was a bit of grief for her teammate, Shannon Gilroy, who tore an anterior cruciate ligament in a New York high school game in mid June. With Gilroy sidelined, Lazo, a recent St. Mary's graduate set to play at Louisville next year, was promoted to the U.S.'s 18-member playing roster.

The first two regular season games between the Chesapeake Bayhawks and Hamilton Nationals produced results you might expect when two playoff caliber lacrosse teams collide. The Bayhawks managed to hang on and win both north-of-the-border games in close fashion, beating the Nationals by four goals in May and one goal two weeks ago. However, the outcome of Saturday night's contest was anything but predictable. The Bayhawks suffered their most lopsided loss this season as a flurry of first-half Hamilton goals led to a nine-goal run by the Nationals that lasted from 3:19 left in the first quarter until Brian Carr oll scored one minute into the second half.
