What Makes Our School Special?
Boston Latin School, founded in 1635, is the oldest school in
the United States. The Latin School serves an economically
and culturally diverse population of students in grades 7 to
12. Boston Latin School seeks to ground its students in a
contemporary classical education as preparation for
successful college studies, responsible and engaged
citizenship, and a rewarding life. All students in grade 10
passed the 2007 MCAS. 99% of the members of the Class
of 2007 were accepted to 4-year colleges.
What Kinds of Parent Support and Resources Does Our
School Provide?
BLS parents are actively involved in the life of the school.
In addition to participation in such traditional parent
organizations as SSC, SPC and Home & School Association,
they also serve as volunteers in the school. Parents have
formed specific groups such as the Friends of the Arts in
order to provide assistance to the entire BLS community.
The BLS web site, www.bls.org, provides an on-going source
of information for all parents including an events calendar
and homework assignment pages.
How are We Preparing Our Students for Educational
Success?
Boston Latin School has an honors curriculum. All courses
represent a challenging academic experience. In addition to
the regular course offerings, the school offers 22
different Advanced Placement courses. All students
enrolled in AP courses are required to take the Advanced
Placement exam. In order to ensure that our students
successfully complete our rigorous academic program
safety nets are in place. An orientation program takes
place in the summer before admission to familiarize
students and parents with the school and its curriculum.
During the course of the school year after school tutorial
sessions are provided for students in need of assistance.
Saturday Success School provides at risk students with
both mentoring and tutoring assistance every Saturday
from 9AM to 12PM throughout the school year. Faculty,
upper level students and alumni provide tutoring assistance.
All of grade 7 and half of grade 8 are grouped into small
learning communities in order to ease the young students'
transition into the demanding academic environment of
Boston Latin School. The Guidance and Support Services
Department provides a variety of supports for students at
all levels. A linkage has been made with Children's Hospital
to provide support and assistance to students, parents and
faculty as they deal with adolescent issues. A mentor
program based on Writers' Workshop provides assistance
to all students with their writing. During the course of the
2006-2007 school year, the Optimizing Student Outcomes
Committee, composed of administration, faculty, parents
and students, will continue to focus on the grade 9 students
in order to identify and provide the kinds of support
needed to be successful. The Keefe Library/Media Center
provides students and faculty with access to state of the
art research and computer facilities. All teachers have a
computer and media distribution system in their classrooms.
Many teachers have developed their own web-page and
maintain regular electronic communication with parents.
WBLS, the school's TV station, broadcasts daily to every
classroom.
