FRENCH FIRST CLASS WARSHIPS 1627-1694
.

French measurement method

Ship lenght ("La longuer") measured normally stem to sterpost in outer edges, but sometimes in inner edges.
Also keel ("La quille") lengt is found many ships. In 19th. Century lenght measured also waterline.
Beam ("La largeur")measured usually the outside planking in to 1740s ,and after that in inside planking.
sometime to the 19th. Century beam measured also in waterline.

The depth in hold (“Le creux”) measured probably in distance between bottom of the ship to the lower deck,
but there was several methods in use to measured that.

Draught (“Le tirant”) measured often in fore and stern to the ship, and stern draught was same as the maxium draught.
French tonnage ("Le tonnage") measured in many different way, here is couple of formulas:

1.     keel lenght x beam x depth / 60

2.     lenght from stem to sternpost x beam x depth / 85
