Updates

    23 July 2005
Well, it's been a while without updates, so here's one for you.  I hope everyone's been relaxing over the summer break--well, relaxing and training, to be completely honest.  Next year there are a few things that I would like to accomplish (with your help and dedication, of course!).  We have money allocated to purchase some mats, so we won't be limited to using the Babson Wrestling Club's mats at the Chandor dance studio.  I've also been pondering the idea of an actual Taekwondo club that focuses on World Taekwondo Federation style (Olympic style) TKD--your feedback is welcome.  The main reasons I've even considered doing this separately from SMAC are twofold: 1) we have received an offer from a coach that I know personally to start and teach a TKD club and 2) in order to compete in inter-collegiate matches, we need a recognized TKD club.  So, as always, you can let me know what you think by emailing me at Olin.

Thanks, and enjoy your much-deserved summer rest.

Guess what? Nice people rock! Basically, some Babson people are going to let us use their facilities/equipment:
    1) the Chandor Dance Studio and
    2) a nearly-spanking-new wrestling mat!
Chandor Dance Studio, for anyone who doesn't know, is on the second floor of Webster. It has beautiful wooden floors, lots of room, and mirrors everywhere!

The plan for now is to have practice on Sundays at noon. (As always, if you'd like us to reschedule this, please tell us.) We can meet at Olin, at least for now, aim for 11:55 AM in the first floor, and maybe even jog over to Webster. These practices would generally have different content from the weeknight practices. Dean will bring something totally awesome the next upcoming Sunday, which is October 17th.

If enough people show up, Cheryl will bust out some judo the following week, which would consist of falling and tumbling, plus either easy throws or pinning. The critical mass of people would be for getting out and later rolling up the wrestling mat. And if not enough people show up, we can do a form, or talk, or go home and sleep.

If you are interested in ordering martial arts gear through us, go look at Karate Depot. If you have questions about the products--quality, sizing, etc., you can talk to Cheryl, Dean, Mel, or Chris Murphy, and if you know this particular ninja, Jon Chambers (who does not wear a size 5 gi, but is learning judo in Australia). Go look at cool stuff! Now!

Some people have been asking about Kung Fu. The story here is that there's a lot of paperwork and red tape that needs to be gotten around. Approximate delay time = three to five weeks, but the passionate pursuit is planned to continue for the rest of the semester.

The World Martial Arts Federation is having a tournament on October 24th in Roxbury, MA.  It's $10 to go watch, and $35 to participate in an event. These are typical prices for any tournament.  The Independent Practitioners and Promoters of New England (I.P.P.O.N.E.) is having the Battle of the Champions (karate--though you can bring basically any style you want) on October 31st in Newburyport, MA.  Contact Dean for more information and to express interest in going. We hope to make tournaments something we do once a semester.

    20 Sept 2004
Just finished the first real SMAC practice of the year.  Woo hoo!  Next practice is Wednesday, September 22nd, 3rd floor of the AC.  By popular demand, Wednesday's practice time has been moved to 10:00 to 11:00 PM.  So for now, our regular schedule is
        Monday, 8:00 - 9:00 PM
        Wednesday, 10:00 - 11:00 PM

unless a reasonable contingent of people want it changed. Hey, we could even have class twice on Wednesday night, if that's what you want. But only if you tell us.

For anyone who wants to buy martial arts gear, check out the Karate Depot. We will be taking your orders soon and will combine them into one big, happy, money-saving order.

We are looking into reserving the Chandor Dance Studio for an hour. This will give us a spacious place with nice wooden floors, wall-to-wall mirrors, and the possible use of a wrestling mat. So, anyone for practice on Sunday? Their schedule is pretty booked during the weekdays, and personally, I don't want practice on Saturday. Tell (email?) us what you think.

Oh, and if you want a recap of our first meeting, here's the email that Dean sent out.
