Kieler Woche: Dates and Events

 

1882

On 23 July, 20 yachts start at the first regatta. This is the hour when Kieler Woche was born.

 

1887

Marine-Regattaverein (Naval Regatta Society) is founded.

 

1889 German emperor Kaiser Wilhelm II visits the Kiel regattas for the first time. From 1894 on he visits every year.

 

1891

Marine-Regattaverein is granted the name of Kaiserlicher Yacht Club (KYC).

 

1894

The term "Kieler Woche" appears for the first time in a newspaper article for the regatta, which is already several days long.

 

1895 Big celebration when the final stone is laid for the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Kanal (now: Kiel Canal), as part of Kieler Woche.

 

1907

25 years Kieler Woche: Close to 6,000 boats went to the start during the first  quarter century.

 

1912 The well known Felca Prize is donated.

 

1914 News of the assassination in Sarajewo comes through on 28 June during the regatta. The first world war interrupts Kieler Woche for the following four years.

 

1919 Regattas withdrawn due to imminent signing of the Versailles Agreement.

 

1920 The Herbstwoche (Autumn Week for Arts and Science) heralds new trends. These new aspects are once again taken up after 1945.

 

1934 The National Socialists try to appropriate Kieler Woche for a propaganda show.

 

1936 Kiel is Olympic City for the first time.

 

1937 Kiel sailing societies are brought into line by the National Socialists as  „Yacht-Club von Deutschland".

 

1945 The first sailing week after the second world is called „Kiel Week“ and is organised by the British occupying power.

 

1946 The English allow the re-establishment of KYC as „Kieler Yacht-Club“.

 

1947 The September Aufbauwoche "Kiel im Aufbau" (re-building of Kiel) becomes the foundation for the later Kieler Woche.

 

1948 The first German Kieler-Woche sailing races after the war take place at the end of June. Official representatives from Scandinavia and Great Britain participate at the Aufbauwoche in September.

 

1949 The previously purely sailing event Kieler Woche and Aufbauwoche are merged into a new Kieler Woche.

 

1950 Theodor Heuss visits Kieler Woche as the first German President ever to attend.

 

1951 The Cultural Senate is founded.

 

1952 On the recommendation of the Cultural Senate the City Council grants painter Emil Nolde the newly created Culture Prize of the City.

 

1955 The diplomatic corps visits and is guest every year since.

 

1958 The friendly relationships with the Scandinavian countries are deepened through the participation of the Norwegian Prime Minister Einar Gerhardsen.

 

1962 Important stages and orchestras from Scandinavia set new trends in the cultural sector.

 

1967

Presentation series of East European graphic arts begins with the exhibition "Cecoslowacian Graphics".

 

1972 90 years Kieler Woche: For the second time the Olympic sailing competition is held in Kiel. The windjammer parade is celebrated as the “Jahrhundertschau-spiel“ (Spectacle of the Century).

 

1973 The festival enters into a new phase in the social policy sector with the Kieler Woche Congress. The congress replaces political lectures and main topics. For the first time official representatives from all countries bordering the Baltic Sea participate.

 

1974 Domestic and foreign writers meet at the P.E.N.-Congress. The Spiellinie at Kiellinie opens up new aspects for the public festival and cultural sector - following the model of the Olympic Spielstraße in Munich.

 

1977 A municipal government policy seminar is organised for the first time for city delegations (Internationales Städteforum).

 

1978 More than 20 nations participate in the European Market in the City Hall square.

 

1981 The European Market turns into an International Market offering delicacies dishes and handicrafts from all over the world.

 

1982 Kieler Woche celebrates its 100th birthday, which closes with a large windjammer parade.

 

1985

Notable authors participate for the first time at the festival week with a literature market and readings in the town districts.

 

1987

The Kieler Yacht-Club, main organiser of the Kiel Week sailing events celebrates its 100th anniversary.

 

1992 Kieler Woche meets 750-Year Jubilee of the City of Kiel.

 

1994 100th Kieler Woche celebrated (1915-1919 and 1940-1946: no Kieler Woche took place).

 

1995

100-Year Anniversary of the Kiel Canal (formerly Kaiser-Wilhelm-Kanal) is the centre of attention for this Kieler Woche.

 

1997

For the 50th time since 1948 a Kiel Week poster promotes the festival week.

1998

For the 25th time the young and the old create, play, and celebrate at the Spiellinie at Kiellinie. German President Roman Herzog and the diplomatic corps participate in the windjammer parade on the training vessel "Gorch Fock".

 

1999

The concept of Kieler Woche, introduced after the war -  sailing, social policies, culture and summer festival as equal-ranking components - is 50 years old.

 

2000

German President Johannes Rau opens the festival week, which takes place against the background of the world exhibition EXPO 2000 in Hanover.

 

2001

The Land Capital of Kiel Science Prize is bestowed upon the Kiel pathologist Prof. Dr. Karl Lennert as the first recipient.

 

2002

The 25th International Market takes place.

The Volvo Ocean Race finishes in Kiel.

2003   The Kieler Woche has a main sponsor (BMW) for the first time.
    
2004 BMW is the ″presenter“ of the Kieler Woche. HSH NORDBANK is a new partner sponsoring sport and culture.
