Canberrans speak out on proposed memorial bridge

Canberrans have voiced their concerns over a foot-bridge planned for Lake Burley Griffin.

Submissions to a Parliamentary Inquiry into the bridge's design and funding processes closed today and public hearings start on Monday.

Almost 20 submissions have been published with an overwhelming amount of responses criticising the plans.

The National Capital Committee will report by the end of May on the designs and funding of the Immigration Bridge Australia proposal.

Committee chair ACT Labor Senator Kate Lundy says she is looking forward to hearing a broad range of views from the community.

"What we've seen with submissions to this inquiry is there's a great deal of passionate interest about the bridge proposal, both for an against," she said.

Senator Lundy says there have been mixed responses to the proposal.

"We're very lucky to live in a city that is a work of art in itself, it's design by Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony is very precious to many Canberrans," she said.

"Anything that's going to change that feeling of this city does raise great passion."
