Election to the afPE Board - Frequently Asked Questions

1. I’m concerned about the time commitment if I become a Board member, please could you clarify this?

24 days is a maximum and will only be achieved by Board members who are on sub committees, it also includes reading / preparation time.  We expect to hold Board meetings only every 2 months, except at the beginning of each cycle, when they may meet in each of the first two months.

2. Will my school be paid supply cover for days I am on afPE business?

At the moment, afPE cannot commit to supply cover. This will be reviewed when we are in a position to be confident about budgets and income, and about the Charity Commission position regarding the possibility of providing teacher cover payments. We do believe that Board experience is an excellent form of CPD which schools should take into account.

3. Will my expenses incurred on afPE business be covered?

Yes

4. Will the Board members be representative of the constituent membership group?

Board members stand for election on the basis of their skills, experience and commitment. Ideally there should be a balance of members from across the UK and professional constituencies.

World Cup – score a few educational goals

The new Sport Zone on the Global Gateway shows how to use football and other sports to hit targets in school development, in citizenship, in SED, PHSE – specifically in understanding about self, about others and about the world. The Gateway is the official DfES website for schools adding an international dimension. You can use it to find a partner school in any one of 81 countries, and access guidance to support school partnering, including ICT tools, projects to participate in worldwide and lesson plans. The new Sport Zone shows how the World Cup is the perfect hook for an assembly, a school event, a class discussion or activity. The themes of international sporting competition include good health, fair play, respecting diverse cultures (including anti racism), personal goals and peace. There’s material on all these themes that will remind teachers and school leaders why sport is of such immense value to schools, in the UK and worldwide. If you know your Ronaldo from your Ronaldinho you have that much more of a chance to make those goals really count!

Lack of Physical Education teachers puts health drive in doubt

The government's commitment to tackle childhood obesity has been thrown into doubt because Glasgow's primary schools have only a handful of Physical Education teachers.

Figures released by the Scottish Executive show that in 2005 there were just three teachers with a principal subject of Physical Education between Glasgow's 178 primary schools. This follows a recent report which showed that only 5 per cent of primary schools in Scotland were receiving the minimum requirement of two hours of physical education each week.

Critics called for an urgent recruitment drive, warning that failure to address the shortage would result in crippling health and social problems.

However, the executive insisted it was on course to meet its target of putting an additional 400 Physical Education teachers into primary and secondary schools by next year.
