P

eople still know their neighbors in the small but thriving Blount County community of Hayden. "It's easy to develop good relationships here with your neighbors and the families your children go to school with," said Craig Johnson, a local business owner who has lived in Hayden for all of his 39-plus years.

Johnson credits the local churches with helping to foster an ongoing community spirit in a town that's poised at the brink of a major growth spurt. "The churches here are always reaching out to the community, looking for new ideas," said Johnson. "They're not resting on their laurels.

"A lot of the same people in the churches are also teachers and administrators in the schools," said Johnson, who has two children of his own. "They're class people who practice what they preach and teach. They have a lot of integrity."

Integrity and forward thinking will both be needed to keep Hayden on track and preserve its small-town atmosphere if its expected growth - both residential and commercial - continues.

"A lot of young couples are being drawn to the area by its good schools and affordable housing," said Realtor Ed Sanders of RealtySouth's Northern office. Sanders also foresees a boom in commercial growth in the next year or two.

In the past, such growth was hampered by a lack of infrastructure, especially in the form of adequate water and sewage systems. However, the water system has already been upgraded, and help for the sewer system is on the way.

"Upgrading the Blount County water system has been a big help," said Sanders. "The Blount County Water Authority has been expanding and is producing its own water. Now the infrastructure is keeping up with the development. The area is not relying so much on Birmingham and Cullman water - it has its own plentiful water supply."

Construction of a new sewer system is scheduled to begin by summer's end.

"Once the sewer comes in, we'll get more fast-food restaurants and grocery stores," said Sanders.
