According to Broadway World, auditions for the new Aladdin stage musical are today, and three of the parts they are auditioning are Babkak, Omar, and Kassim!
Babkak, Omar, and Kassim are three characters that appeared in the original treatment Howard Ashman wrote for Aladdin in 1988; they're three friends of Aladdin's and fellow streetrats:
Quote:
BABKAK – 20s, chubby, romantic desert dweller, part of Aladdin’s band; the “Crosby” of this Arabian “Road” picture, although perhaps with a bit more flair.
OMAR – 20s, nervous, diminutive desert dweller, part of Aladdin’s band; the “Lamour”.
KASSIM – 20s, tough (inside and out) desert dweller, part of Aladdin’s band; the “Hope”.

There's a new video on the site FunnyOrDie.com called "The Brown Bunny", animated by Will Finn (lead animator of Iago) and set to the audio of one of Gilbert Gottfried's jokes from his CD "Dirty Jokes". Will was a big fan of Gilbert's even before he animated his character in Aladdin, and apparantly still is.
As you can probably guess from the name of the CD, not appropriate for young children and NSFW. Thanks Salukfan for the link!
The 5th Avenue Theatre [in Seattle] has apparently forged a deal with the Walt Disney Company to stage the world premiere of a new Disney musical, "Aladdin," in the summer.

I'm a bit late on this post, but...
Quote:
Menken received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in a ceremony that took place near the El Capitan Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard. The songwriter was being honored for his body of work, which includes the scores to the animated movies "The Little Mermaid," "Beauty and the Beast," "Aladdin" and "Pocahontas."

The new rap song "Roman's Revenge" by Nicki Minaj starts with an Aladdin reference:
I am not Jasmine, I’m Aladdin
So far ahead, these bums is laggin’
Presumably that's a reference to "One Jump Ahead". The rest of the song is definitely NSFW, just so you know.
Does it seem to anyone else that there are a lot more Aladdin references in pop culture in the past couple of years than normal? Saturday Night Live, The Simpsons, Family Guy (on two separate occasions), Community; do you remember any others?
