Every organization needs good leadership in order to win againstthe competition. Through his own personal story and those of nineother Rangers, Barber illuminates fundamental lessons about what itreally takes to win. These first-person accounts of trial andtriumph highlight the importance and the inherent truth of theArmys most fundamental leadership principles: seeking andtaking responsibility for your actions, and knowing yourself andseeking self-improvement. Adhering to those principlesandputting them at the core of your organizationwill push youand your company to do more and do it better.

This is one of the best leadership books to come along in quite a while. Brace Barber is the real deal, as are the men who tell their stories in this book. It's not sugar-coated or "politically correct." It draws real connections for the reader from the character and principles and personal strength and commitment of these Rangers to the character and principles and personal strength required to be successful as a leader in any environment. Having come from a similar background, and having transitioned to the business world in 1990, I can say without pause that what you will learn here will serve you well as a leader. To quote part of the introduction that speaks the most to me: "No Excuse Leadership gives readers a foundation of principle, purposes, and attitudes that they can begin using immediately to impact the long-term success of themselves and their organizations." I continue to give this book to people I care about, leaders who are eager to learn the valuable lessons enclosed and apply them to their lives. You will not be disappointed.
Why does one man make it through Ranger School, while another "stronger" or "smarter" guy does not? Leaders bring out the best in their men, and Rangers learn how to do that in Ranger School
Most of this book is not about leadership. Instead, it is about what it is like to be an Army Ranger. I would say 15% of the book is dedicated to the subject of leadership in the Rangers. The book hits not so much at the intellectual level, but at the emotions. It does a fine job of describing the ATTITUDE of Ranger leadership. Perhaps it is implying that leadership is mostly about winning attitude. The book holds the reader with its tales of harsh training every Ranger must suffer. Its training is specifcially designed to push every Ranger to their physical and psychological limits, resulting in what appears to be a near death experience to most Rangers. I found it intriguing that Rangers lose sexual appetite during their brutal training because all they can think about is their basic survival (warmth, food, shelter, and overcoming pain) while successfully accomplishing their mission.
Before I went to Ranger School I was enthralled with anything and everything associated to the school. I looked for anything that would give me an edge to earning the coveted Ranger Tab. This book does a great job at helping you understand some of the hard ships you will face. It also shows you the values that you will be expected to live by every day, for the rest of your life, as a Ranger.
Some of the information is out dated, which is expected, as it was written by individuals that had completed the course several years ago. However, the principles of being a Ranger still remain the same.
No Excuse Leadership is a great book for anyone looking to become a better leader at any job! All the storys can be related to by anyone. It is not just for someone in the military or someone looking to attend Ranger School.
I purchased a number of these books and use them as high school graduation and birthday gifts. Brace is a very good author and the book is easy to read. I recommend this book.
This book contains several leadership examples, each displaying a key characteristic of a leader such as perseverence, confidence, humbleness, and honesty. I highly recommend this book for anyone looking to grow personally, whether you are in the military or not. I plan on attending Ranger School in a few years and this book has taught me some valuable lessons that I have already began to apply to my life so I can become a true leader of character.
I like two things in particular about this book. First, it is not overly complicated in its explanation of leadership. It focuses on issues like trust and discipline. Secondly, it does this through stories. We may or may not remember ideas, but stories we do remember. And these stories are not told ABOUT Rangers, they are told BY Rangers. You can feel like you are sitting there talking with the person and they aren't being edited while you do. Enjoy.
