Genetics and Genetic Disorders
The AHA Equine Stress, Research and Education Subcommittee on Genetic Disorders has developed this special section on genetics and genetic disorders of particular interest to the Arabian breed. Our goals are to help educate the Arabian horse community, promote genetic testing, encourage disclosure of test results, and support continued research. Several tests for genetic disorders found in Arabian horses have been developed. Information relating to these conditions and their respective testing procedures follow this introduction. There are other conditions that also have genetic factors and need further study. We intend to provide updated information on various studies as it becomes available, to assist you in making wise breeding and purchasing decisions and to address concerns relating to behaviors or conditions your Arabians might exhibit. Please submit questions relating to such issues in our new Question & Answer Forum.
To help support research efforts, the Arabian Horse Foundation was officially re-launched at the 2007 AHA Convention. This 501(c)(3) organization focuses on several areas of funding, including equine research specifically concerning disorders and illnesses that affect the Arabian breed. In May 2008, the Foundation named a Research Advisory Panel to assist the Foundation in prioritizing research projects for potential funding. Please participate in supporting the Foundation's efforts by sending your tax deductible contributions designated for research to: Arabian Horse Foundation, Treasurer - Jim Cada, 1024 K. St., Lincoln, NE 68508. For more information on the Foundation or to make a contribution online click here.
