The new
book that this website is based on!
|
This new
book will showcase the histories of the great maritime "trio of trios":
|
Cunard Line's Lusitania,
Mauretania and Aquitania |
|
White Star's infamous trio
Olympic, Titanic and Britannic |
|
&
Hamburg-Amerika's
Imperator, Vaterland and Leviathan |
Never before in history
had the great steamship lines of the Atlantic created trios of sister
ships - each set successively slated to be the largest or the fastest
ships in the world as they entered service - to serve in a weekly
service connecting Europe and America. Nor would this great competition
be repeated in the same form; later ships would prove larger or faster,
but the strange combination of optimism and circumstance would never
again produce three sets of cutting-edge liners like these nine great
ships.
For their groundbreaking
technology, unprecedented size, luxury and speed, for the short-lived
era that produced them, and for the remarkable roles that they would
play in making history, these ships have been chosen to be the focus of
this book.
An idea of the the
volume's scope can be seen through a perusal of this website. The volume
will be packed with details on these ships, including an in-depth look
at the oft-forgotten Imperator-class trio from Hamburg-Amerika.
There will also be rare and previously unpublished photographs of the
ships.
The book should be
available through
Cafe
Press for order during February/March 2005. Check back here for updates regularly!
In the meantime, the
Atlantic Liners
gift and novelty
store is open.
If you have photographic
or reference material on these ships that you would like to contribute
to the publication, please make sure to contact me
as soon as possible to make sure there is enough time to include them in
its pages.
