London withdraws 2012 World Chess Championship Bid (Bid Withdrawn)

IM Malcolm Pein has released a statement on behalf of Chess Promotions Ltd of which he his CEO announcing that they could not arrive at an agreement with the International Chess Federation FIDE to host the World Chess Championships in London in 2012. After lengthy negotiations with FIDE they put a proposal to the organisation and a final deadline of Saturday 29th January 2011. Once that deadline passed without agreement they had to withdraw from the process as they felt there was too little time left to organise the event properly. A specific problem was that there was a deadline to sign an agreement to obtain their preferred venue that passed once agreement couldn't be found.

World Championship Candidates 2011 (Kazan RUS)
Tue 3rd May 2011 - Fri 27th May 2011 - Official Site

WCh Candidates (8 players 3 Rds KO Indiv TC:120m:60m:15m+30spm(61))

Final Candidates Pairings now published (1)

FIDE have released the 1st round pairings of the Candidates Matches in Kazan, 3rd-27th May 2011.

Topalov (BUL) - Kamsky (USA)

Kramnik (RUS) - Radjabov (AZE)

Aronian (ARM) - Grischuk (RUS)

Gelfand (ISR) - Mamedyarov (AZE)

According to a Russian report the winners of the outer two pairings will meet in the semi-finals as will the inner two. Thus the potentially problematic Topalov against Kramnik match (their match in Elista for the world title was one of the very most bitter in chess history) cannot take place until the final. Veselin Topalov and his manager Silvio Danailov said that Topalov would refuse to play a Russian in a match on Russian soil and so a similar problem with Grischuk has also been postponed. That said all three rounds are scheduled to take place in Kazan and FIDE must be hoping that the final between Topalov and one of the Russians doesn't happen as there has been no contingency announced.

Nakamura wins Tata Steel tournament in Wijk aan Zee (13)

Hikaru Nakamura won his first super-tournament with 9/13 half a point clear of World Chess Champion Viswanathan Anand. The final round saw all the games drawn. This looks likely to be just staging point on a career at the very top and Nakamura stated that his next target is passing the 2800 rating barrier currently surpassed by only Magnus Carlsen, Anand and Levon Aronian. Carlsen and Aronian had to settle for shared 3rd place and although neither seemed at their very best both will also gain rating points. 16 year old Anish Giri's 50% and a real quality to his play also is surely just at the start of his elite career. Gashimov wins Reggio on tie-break from Vallejo (9)

Two quick draws in the final round involving the leaders settled the fate of the Reggio Emilia tournament. Both Vugar Gashimov and Francisco Vallejo Pons had the black pieces and equalised easily enough. They both scored 6/9 but the Sonneborn-Berger tie-break favoured Gashimov mostly by virtue of his victory over Vallejo. Movsesian, Navara and Ivanchuk scored 5/9. The returning Alexander Morozevich was defeated by Ivanchuk for a final score of 4/9. Nigel Short lost to Navara and finished on 3.5/9.

Gashimov agreed a draw in the final round to win the tournament.
