General Johnson saving a Wounded French Officer from the Tomahawk of a North American Indian” by Benjamin West, PRA
Oil on canvas, painted 1764 - 1768
This oil painting shows a scene set in the 1750s during the British, French and Indian War in America: General Sir William Johnson is shown stopping a Native American warrior from taking the scalp of a French soldier.
Benjamin West (1738 to 1820) was an American, born in Pennsylvania, who studied painting in Italy before settling in London in 1763. He is renowned for his portraits as well as his paintings of historical events.
This is an important painting as it shows a historical event through the eyes of a contemporary American artist painting just after the actual events shown.
