Wales is committed to disability sport. DSW receives support and funding through the Sports Council for Wales. The Welsh Assembly Government recognises DSW as the National Organisation responsible for the strategic development of sport for disabled people within Wales.

DSW is a member of the British Paralympic Association and a co-opted partner of CP Sport England and Wales. Partnerships also exist with UK national organisations such as the UK Sports Association for People with Learning Disabilities, British Blind Sport and a host of UK National Governing Bodies of Sport.

The core programmes of DSW are:

a) A national Community programme which delivers local sporting and physical activity opportunities, which contribute toward a healthy nation and supports the ambition of the Welsh Assembly Government’s strategy ‘Climbing Higher’ and its framework document ‘next steps’.

The programme is a joint initiative between DSW, the Sports Council for Wales and the 22 Local Authorities in Wales. The programme is aimed at developing quality based sporting and physical activity opportunities for disabled people throughout Wales.

In 2002 the programme delivered 1200 opportunities per year. By March 2006, the figure had risen to over 78,000 with 355 clubs having been developed and over 600 coaches and volunteers trained in the community.

To find out more about the Community programme click on the ‘grassroots’ tab.

b)The Academy programme was launched in October 2006. The programme aims to assist emerging athletes to provide them with every opportunity to achieve their full potential in sport.

Since ‘going live’ over 80 young athletes have been invited onto the programme and are currently being supported through a range of complimentary programmes and services.

c) The High Performance programme supports elite athletes and squads via a range of services, normally in partnership with UK National Governing Bodies of Sport and the Welsh Institute of Sport.

Wales has a proud history at the elite level of disability sport.

At the 2004 Athens Paralympic Games the Welsh contingent of Team Paralympics GB was 22 athletes. In 2006 Wales had 4 athletes competing in the Torino Paralympic Games, as part of Team Paralympics GB. In addition, 39 Welsh athletes represented GB in International Paralympic Committee World Championships. In 2005 Wales were represented at the Melbourne Deaflympic Games and more recently at the INAS FID World Games for intellectually disabled athletes.

DSW ensures that all of its programmes are completely inclusive, offering individuals the opportunity to achieve a full and active role within their sporting communities, whilst at the same time providing a structured “pathway” through which talented sports performers can compete at the highest levels of sport.
