The Stockholm Palace is the official residence of the monarch of Sweden, and for this reason it is also called the royal palace. The palace in the heart of Stockholm has more than 600 rooms, and ranks among the largest well-preserved palaces in Europe. In addition, it is one of the most remarkable baroque buildings in Scandinavia. The building was built on top of the foundations of an older castle, which was subsequently enlarged by Gustav Wasa in the 16th century. Parts of the palace can be visited today.
