German general, conspirator in the attempt to kill Adolf Hitler. Beck had served on the German General Staff in World War I, and was Chief of the General Staff from 1935. He was one of the main conspirators in the anti-Hitler resistance movement, and was to be Hitler's successor as head of state after the planned assassination of Hitler on July 20, 1944. However, Hitler survived the bomb blast, and Beck and the other main conspirators were rounded up at Army headquarters on Bendlerstrasse and placed under arrest. Beck attempted to commit suicide, but two attempts to shoot himself failed to kill him, and he was then shot to death by order of General Fromm.
