Lieutenant-General
1763-1838
Georg Dubislav Ludwig von Pirch is best
remembered for his service as Generalmajor in command of the Prussian
II Corps of Blucher's army in the Waterloo campaign. A native
of Magdeburg, he was appointed to this command in May 1815 following
the mutiny of the Saxon troops in the army, led it with distinction
at Ligny, and two days later formed part of the Prussian force
which fell upon Napoleon's right flank at Waterloo. He is often
referred to as 'Pirch I', the use of Roman numerals being used
in Prussian service to distinguish officers of the same name,
in this case from his brother, seven years his junior, Otto Karl
Lorenz, who commanded the 2nd Division of Zieten's I Corps in
the same campaign, and who is often styled 'Pirch II'. Georg Pirch
was promoted to Generalleutnant after the Waterloo campaign, retired
in 1816 and died in 1838.
