News - Seiken Densetsu: Heroes of Mana (DS) scans, info

Posted by Josh Freund at 11:41:09 PM EST on 9.13.2006.

As you can tell from the scans below, Seiken Densetsu: Heroes of Mana is obviously not like Seiken Densetsu 2 (Secret of Mana), as some readers had hoped. It appears instead to be a real-time strategy RPG taking place 19 years before the events of SD3.

We've now got some info on the people behind HoM. Koichi Ishii (all past Seiken Densetsu/Mana titles) will be producing. Masato Kato (of Chrono Trigger fame) will be handling the scenario. Character design will be done by Ryoma Ito (Final Fantasy Tactics Advance) and Akira Oguro (Final Fantasy X). Last, but certainly not least, the game's music will be done by Yoko Shimomura (Kingdom Hearts, Legend of Mana).

This is probably the only way that I would have ever purchased a RTS game... you got me Squarenix, got me right by the whatsits.

"Tell me Square Enix, why is it so hard for you to make a game that is like an old 16-bit title called "Secret of Mana"?"

Square-Enix makes each FF different and gets accused of rehashing. Square-Enix makes each Mana game different and they get accused of not rehashing enough. I don't get it.

Anyway, Seiken Densetsu 3 is better than Secret of Mana, and Dawn of Mana should fulfill your need for a SoM-like experience.

I personally found SD3 to be a good Secret of Mana game. It just needed to be translated and brought over from japan.

Seiken Densetsu 3, Legend of Mana, Sword of Mana, and now Heroes of Mana. All of them close but no cigar.

Tell me Square Enix, why is it so hard for you to make a game that is like an old 16-bit title called "Secret of Mana"?

Square's getting as bad as Sega with the "Shining" series. I want my Shinings to be turn-based strategy-RPGs, my Manas to be action-RPGs, and my Final Fantasies to be turn-based RPGs (that don't star Gackt every time).

Titus did it right. Ogre Battle for the real-time SRPG line and Tactics Ogre for the turn-based SRPGs.

Next thing you know, FF Tactics will be a freaking shooter.

thanks buddy,

we realize the game doesn't have a english name, you know, not being a game released in an english speaking country and all.

People call it secret of mana 2 because here, to people in the US, the series is fondly remembered as secret of mana. So we will call the sequel to that game, secret of mana 2.

let's not pointlessly nitpick.

Seiken Densetsu 3 is -not- Secret of Mana 2. It has no "... of Mana" name, because it was never localized here in the US where they started the "... of Mana" nomenclature. It's the only game in the series that doesn't have one.

"Though, I do hope there's an equally fine action RPG in the series sometime soon, too."

19 years before SD3? Hm. Angela is the oldest in that game, and she's 19. Other than that, the Dragon Emperor will still be at large, so I imagine he'll play into the plot.

This game has a great team. If they play it right it may well be the best Seiken Densetsu since Secret of Mana (much as I like SD3). Though, I do hope there's an equally fine action RPG in the series sometime soon, too.

I just now read this... takes place 19 years before SD3? Hot damn! No wonder that ice field reminds me so much of Altena.

Now we just need Square-Enix to release SD3 on the DS, then translate it.

"I thought Secret of Mana was Seiken Densetsu 2, with Final Fantasy Adventure/Sword of Mana being Seiken Densetsu 1 and Seiken Densetsu 3 being a japan only SNES game."

That is correct.

stiggles has the Seiken Densetsu series laid out correctly. cain, FFLegends 1-3 were the US version of SaGa 1-3 for gameboy (the games that came before Romancing SaGa, etc).

YES!!! I wasn't expecting this, but awesome! I needed another decent tactics game. Let's hope they don't ruin it like they did FFTA.

Looks groovy, I want. I don't mind the change in style, its looks like a Mana game with a Tactics edge to it. Should be cool.

Awww :/

When I first saw the scans(without reading the post, of course) I thought that it was going to be a Secret of Mana-style MMO, which my friends and I have been dreaming of. (AKA a faster-paced, portable Ragnarok Online)

I hope they can give it a story more of FFT-calibur rather than the light story of FFTA.

"isn't DS getting Children of mana bounch? "

yes, I bought it for 20 bucks played it once and sold it for 30 bucks. lol.

I'm probably going to get the US one because I need a dungeon hack, but CoM isn't a real mana game sadly. I want a true rpg one with that battle system, like SoM and SoM2

are we sure this is RTS? and not TBS?

I don't wanna dredge thorugh all the katakana, but are we just guessing from the sheer number of characters on there or has someone translated it for a fact?

Wow... lots of news and stuff today... A lot of Square Info... Makes you wonder...

I'd like to give a tip of my hat to the GAF crew tonight though, it's 11:49 eastern and they're still chugging at it with fresh news and getting ready for the Japanese meeting in about an hour. You guys are my heroes.
