Empty Stargate and Daniel (Homecoming)

Visit the GateWorld Podcast page for more about the show!

Yesterday news broke that Stargate Universe will not be continuing on in movie form, and that the SG-1 and Atlantis movies have been permanently mothballed, as well. GateWorld’s Darren and David called an emergency session of the GateWorld Podcast to talk about (and commiserate over) the news. Has MGM lost faith in the Stargate franchise, or has the studio decided to let it lay fallow and rejuvenate it in a few years? How long will it take to come back? And what is GateWorld going to do now?

We want to hear from you. It’s a sad time for Stargate fans, and we want the GateWorld Podcast to be a place where you can share your disappointment and frustrations, but also your fond memories of the past 14 years of Stargate. And what do you think the future may yet hold? Call the Podcast Hotline and leave us a brief message, and we’ll continue to air your thoughts in the weeks to come.

We also have four episodes of Stargate Universe still to enjoy! So watch those new episodes Monday nights on Syfy, and leave us a voicemail with your thoughts on Stargate‘s final hours.

  • I blame Comcast / NBC it looks like the are doing to SCIFI what they did to tech tv /g4.

I just say HANDS off CSN Chicago or the team may just pull out!

Also I Hope you lose the NHL to fox or ESPN.

Also 2010 Olympics just said that NBC should never have them again.

  • I never really got into Universe much… And Stargate Sg1 pretty much ran it’s course… but I hope I speak for all the fans when I say… Please, don’t leave the pegasus galaxy like that.

  • I still think SCIFI should continue SGU with a mini series to finish off it’s story instead oF it ending into a cliff hanger. Which will be very DISSAPOINTING! I have loved SGU’s second season and was hoping for a Third!

I also think a Fourth Series of Stargate would be ideal for the franchise’s future. I have been watching Stargate since (SG1) first came out when I was young and, I have been a fan of Stargate ever since. I’ve also enjoyed all of the three stargate’s series.

I would love to see how the Fourth Series of Stargate will turn out to be? And I am hoping that the franchise will NEVER END BECAUSE; I WANT TO WATCH MORE STARGATES!!!!!!!!!!

  • Here’s how I see it: Brad Wright decided to terminate Atlantis because it wasn’t his baby. He wanted to build a new Stargate series and make it more like Battlestar Galactica. He also re-wrote “Children of the Gods” to suit his Dieney-esque vision for it to make it more “family friendly”. Who asked for this? Not the fans. When the Stargate fans complained about terminating Atlantis, he ignored them. When fans complained about the slow pace of Universe, he ignored them. He thought he’d get “new” fans. He was wrong. His ego couldn’t handle the rejection, even though it wasn’t universal. Finally, SyFy had to cancel Universe because the ratings just weren’t there. I’m sure Brad blames the fans. So now, he’s going to take his ball and go home. He’s the one who decided not to pursue Stargate, no one else.

What can we, as fans, do? I recommend we start an e-mail and letter writing campaign to MGM. Tell them that they have fans that are still interested in Stargate but that it should be under different leadership. Perhaps Glassner, Greenburg, and Richard Dean Anderson would like to get involved in Staragte again. They’d certainly have my vote.

  • Guys seriously, how is a Star Trek example a good thing? How is a reboot, alternate timeline, screw everything, blow up important planet, screw fans, etc. a good example? I’m sorry but Stargate means everything that was, behind and in front of camera, not something recreated out of nothing, only with same name a same spinning ring…

  • Guys, while I still wish they had given SGA that final season and introduced SGU later, honestly what else is there to say except that this is a very sad day.

  • we can say no! no we are not gonna stand for this! saying no is better than nothing.

  • who would have thought robert carlyle would star in a stargate show?? i still cant believe it.

  • oh and i dont know how you guys can talk about future stargate tv, no sane person would greenlight another one. its gonna leap back into feature movies, ones that have nothing to do with the tv shows.

  • I don’t get how some fans can say that the new movie screwed the fans? I didn’t get that feeling at all, and I grew up watching TNG and have watched EVERY episode of EVERY Star Trek that has aired since then (and seen TOS of course). I felt that they approached it with nothing but respect by having Leonard Nimoy in there and saying “this is all new but your universe still exists” and as for blowing up Vulcan, I thought that was a great creative decision. They had to do something to say that this was more than just a prequel and NOBODY would have predicted that Vulcan would get blown up. And its not like the Vulcans can’t find a new planet.

That being said, i do agree with Yxelione that I don’t wanta reboot of Stargate. Part of the fun of the spin-off series of Stargate has been the connection to past lore and being able to bring in new characters. If someone can come in and craft a series as a sort of “soft reboot” that somehow is crafted for a new audience but that existing fans can enjoy I’m all for that. I also hope MGM doesn’t decide to go the movie route as I’ve always seen Stargate as a TV franchise (even though it started as a movie) – Stargate works Waaaaay better in a weekly format (Star Trek does too but that it also works as a movie franchise, sometimes).

  • how about we all work together to convince mgm to get it back?

  • There will be no reboot. One thing a lot of you seem completely unable to understand is that the show NO LONGER MAKES MONEY. It did at one point – primarily back in the halcyon days of SG-1 – but no longer. It gets extremely poor viewing figures, and it doesn’t sell DVDs. Why on earth *would* they keep it going, or reboot it?

The reality is that Brad Wright took a risk. He could have wrapped up the franchise with one more season of SGA and 1 more SG-1 film, but he chose instead to invest in something that he hoped would re-invigorate the franchise for a new generation. It didn’t work, and as a result we lost the last season of SGA and the final SG-1 film.

So ultimately this is down to Brad Wright, but to say he flushed the franchise down the toilet isn’t fair; he took a calculated risk, and it didn’t work. Of course the question is, if SGU had have took off, would we have got an SGA film, and another SG-1 film? I’m still not convinced. I think Brad Wright knew he was waving goodbye to the SG-1 ‘style’ of Stargate when he went with SGU.

  • By the way, if you want to show support for something, show support for Sanctuary. Stargate is done, but Sanctuary is still going, and it sprang from the loins of Stargate… watch it, buy the DVDs, and if you’re going to write to SyFy about something write to them about Sanctuary.

  • no no no no no no no no………. Why MGM Why? Why cancel SGA, it was a hit, yes SGU as still awesome but SGA was better and I still want to know that happens. Sad face :(

  • i honestly dont see how one more SG-1 movie or an SGA movie wouldve helped anybody. We would still be in the same situation we are now. SGU at least showed us how far stargate concept could go.

  • StarGate 1997-2011 RIP. You can talk about reboots all you want, but the stargate we all know and love is gone. I really thought stargate would endure, unlike star trek, but hey atleast all the SGU haters got what they wanted.

Im so done with TV, its nothing to gain from it other then dissapointment.

Live long and prosper gate fans, see ya in 10-50 years for a crappy reboot.

  • SG1 movie cancelled. SGA movie cancelled. Potential SGU wrap-up movie written-off (and just as the end of the season was getting *REALLY* good, too). Bite me, MGM. :(

Best of luck to all cast, crew and producers.

  • Maybe this would be a good time for David to watch Farscape, maybe start discussing a Farscape episode every week.

  • I liked SG-1, and didn’t find SGU interested. But I LOVED SGA!!! I have all 5 seasons! I am furious that they aren’t going to make that Atlantis movie. I am tempted to never watch tv ever again because of this!!!!!

  • @badtaste, I agree completely. 1997-2011 RIP. Stargate will never be the same ever again, this chapter is officially closed.

  • If you wanna talk ratings MGM,try looking in the internet, and you will see how many people around the WORLD actually download and watch Stargate(SG-1,Atlantis,Universe).

And if you are short on money, let us, the fans decide what we want to watch. Let us fund our favorite series, and don’t restrict yourself with just the American continent. It is a planet of more than 7 billion people. And we want to contribute to our favorite franchises.

All I’m saying is,let the fans donate even a dollar, and you’ll have enough money to fund both Stargate films.

  • Being a diehard SG fan, I thought SG-1 and SGA were their best. SGU could have done better if they maintained the original cinematography like the predecessors. And to have the Atlantis and SG-1 movies canceled makes me ever so PO’d. The Stargate “universe” with all that it has become has so much more potential. It’s a shame that Stargate has filed chapter 11.:(

  • This may be a bit long winded. But follow me here.
I was one of the people who was upset over the cancellation of SGA, I really don’t think the story was any where near done. Although a wish did come true on the last episode. Atlantis did return to earth. However I felt that the Wraith Story line was left dangling big time. Then you have the whole “evil Asgard” story line that was incredibly promising. However I was grateful for the 5 years and 100 episodes.

With that said, I was also happy to see a 3rd Stargate show come out, and I was amped about it. From the onset when the news about it being darker and grittier hit Gateworld, I was slightly confused because I have known Stargate to be Campy Science Fiction. I enjoyed it, I always walked away chuckling because of McKay and (insert character name here)bickering or joking around. When I heard the Dark and Gritty comment about SGU I didn’t have a good feeling. Battlestar Pulled it off beautifully and it reflected the state of the world’s conscious perfectly.

When I saw the first episode it looked promising, I knew it would take a few episode to establish what was up. But 10 episodes? Common! That doesn’t mean I didn’t enjoy it, but it was at times painful to watch. Then the second half of Season 1 hit and I was impressed, especially when aliens showed up.

One question, WTF was Brad thinking when he pulled in the Lucian Alliance?

Then season 2 kicked off, I had high hopes. And Season 2 did not disappoint. The stories were interesting and even sometimes riveting. They got some serious exploring done and when Rush found out Destinies true mission, I was thrilled! I love stories involving the Ancients, and I loved the concept of a “mysterious intelligence from before the universe was formed”. I though, SGU found it’s stride, then I heard Caprice was canned (Thank you by the way), I got a very bad feeling. And what pissed me off is that they waited until filming wrapped to pull the plug on SGU, WTF is with that?!

SGU found it’s stride, the stories have been getting better and the mysteries are great. Yes Science fiction shows aren’t known for being massive ratings machines.

What also gets me is that SGU wasn’t a SyFy channel show. It’s a MGM show and SyFy buys the episodes as does Space Channel, SkyOne and a gaggle of other channels. Why does SyFy’s decision mean the end of a show? Why can’t Space, Skyone and the other channels step up and say “we still want it”. And what happened to what SyFy said about Stargate will continue to be part of SyFy? That right there makes me feel like I was lied to.

And one additional thing, I know MGM just went through hell with the bankruptcy. However didn’t Ark of Truth and Continuum make profits? Didn’t Children of The Gods final cut make them money? So what is the harm of making at least 1 SGU movie to wrap it up? For God sakes people Firefly had 14 Episodes and because of the out crying of the fan they made a movie. Farscape canned after 4 years and the fans demanded a 4 hour mini series to wrap it up.

Perhaps I am a weird one, but I don’t like being left out dangling in the wind. I feel it is disrespectful to the loyal fans and I feel it is creative suicide. Who ever made the decision to kill SGU and with Brad Wright not fighting the good fight, I feel that is a slap in the face after almost 20 years of fan loyalty.

  • They are really going to let this happen all three shows gone just like that. SYFY you suck and MGM you recieved $500million for your bankruptcy. All you need to give up is less than 1 percent to get a movie going. You still have fans that want anything stargate. 17 season’s they gave you just like that you turn your back on all the stargate shows. I do not watch SYFY anymore you lost me. One show left sanctuary I watch online downloads. Thank You stargate for the decade and a half of excitement, laughter, action, and fun you will be missed. Thanks alot SYFY and MGM.

  • All the talk of rebooting the series or franchise hurts. It doesnt sound good. If they reboot the series or what not, they will have new cast members. I dont feel like starting from the top and having some noobs playing Amanda Tapping, Michael Shanks, Christopher Judge, RDA, and the rest of the cast’s parts for some movies and stuff. I am sorry I’m just in mourning right now. This is pretty much like we just lost a dog, and having someone come by and say its okay, will get you a new one. If the show has to end, I am fine with that. It has been up for nearly 2 decades. My problem is can we just get a ending, not several cliffhangers! MGM we deserve that much

  • I enjoy SGU, but even so, the writers and producers just made way too many mistakes: not enough characters that you really care about; not enough of the right kind of tension; not enough focus on the tech; everything about the stones; trying to move from a SciFi story to something more like a soap opera; introducing significant story elements that are never resolved (such as the whole alien race that altered Chloe); failing to explore the ship; the Lucien alliance (seriously, why?); the forever-grumpy Rush; etc, etc. Even the discovery of the bridge was anti-climactic.

The episode from last week, “Hunt,” was just terrible. The writers seem to have lost sight of the fact that there should be an arc to the series. Then killing off a bunch of crew, followed by an attitude of “oh, well”? That must reflect the apathy of the people behind it.

I think the overall concept was fabulous — but the execution, except in a few really great episodes — was not there. Hopefully the franchise will get another chance.

  • I have been watching Stargate since 1998 when a mate at work told me about it, so I watched the following week and from then on I was hooked, I have watched all the SG1 episodes (and bought on DVD since they got canceled) and all the Atlantis (same again with DVD). And although I never really got into SGU, I will find it very strange and sad not having my weekly stargate intake. I do hope they do something, but for now I still have my DVDs and at the minute I am re-watch season 3 of SG1 and loving it.
    All the best
    Sam

  • @professorhenryjonesjr – “Why on earth *would* they keep it going, or reboot it?”

You mean like they did with the new Star Trek reboot after Voyager and Enterprise failed to perform?

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, with the right people at the helm, Stargate could go big. It was always being held back by the vision of the creative team behind it.

But what it needs now is time. It has to go away for a while, which I don’t like, but I understand. It needs to cast off all that it was so that it can become something new because with the SG-1 and SGA movies off the table, there’s really no other way for things to play out. If they tried to create a new show right now, in the middle of the turmoil and failure of SGU, it would get sucked into the same situation. So for now, it has to go away, until the right people come along to bring it back. Hopefully it will wait for that rather than the wrong people being dragged in to try to force it back.

  • I’m sad to see the end of Stargate but it did run its course and Ive all my boxsets to re-watch anytime I please. I would’ve been up for another SG-1 movie but oh well!

What will likely happen now is that Dean Devlin & Co. can pick up where the original Stargate movie left off, make their own two sequels to finish their planned triology thereby creating a parallel Stargate universe that will spawn a new Stargate TV show for a new era! :D Bring it on.

  • That sucks big time about the moives. How could MGM do that to all stargate fans.

Us fans have been surporting Stargate since the beginning and now this.

Us fans will never know what going to happen with the three moives. there are so many unanswered questions that i know Fans would like to know the answers to.

like how are the Iscarus crew going to return back to earth and what going to happen to Atlantis now that on earth and what going to happen to SG1 and with Jack and Sam will they or won’t they get together? Fans are hoping that they will get together and so do i.

it a shame that Brad and Robert can’t get any sponcers for the three moives like what happen to Bay watch…. they could contact David Hasslehoff to get ideas from him after all bay watch was cancel after the first season and they manage to get sponers and now they did ten seasons and what two bay watch moives. If it works for Bay watch why not for Stargate.
