About Heywood

A mill town, Heywood thrived during the industrial revolution. Heywood has the nickname 'Monkey Town', thought to derive from an area called Heap Bridge, or 'ape bridge' as it sounds in the local accent. Heywood's population is 30,000. It became part of Rochdale in 1974. The Heywood family appear at two key moments in British history.
