About the 4th Infantry Division

The 4th Infantry Division is the Army’s First Digitized Division.  It is commanded by Major General Ray Odierno, and the Command Sergeant Major is CSM Michael Gravens.  The Division shares a long and distinguished history that includes combat in three wars. It has earned twenty-one campaign streamers with twenty Ironhorse soldiers receiving the Congressional Medal of Honor.

Today, the 4th Infantry Division is the most lethal, modern, and deployable heavy division in the world; it is prepared to conduct full-spectrum combat operations.   It is organized with five Brigade-sized elements: three maneuver brigades, a combat aviation brigade, division artillery, and division support command.  The division is split-based, with one maneuver brigade in Fort Carson, Colorado, and the remainder in Fort Hood, Texas.  The Ironhorse Division is proud of its trained and motivated soldiers, professional officer and non-commissioned officer corps, and its soldier and family programs.  This all contributes to the 4th Infantry Division being the premiere division in the Army, one that works hard at striking a balance between readiness and quality of life.  It is a great place to serve.

Fort Hood is in the beautiful “Hill and Lake” country of central Texas.  The Post is approximately 60 miles north of the capital city of Austin, 50 miles south of Waco, and is centered two hours from both Dallas and San Antonio.  The area provides a wide range of cultural and recreational activities.  Fort Carson is located in the southern edge of Colorado Springs and is East of the Rocky Mountains.  Its unique location provides for a wide range of opportunities.

The Ironhorse Division is a proud, combat-ready organization located in great locations that provide its soldiers and their families unlimited opportunities to grow and develop.

            Steadfast and Loyal!
