History

Founded in September 1935 as a reaction to fascist Italy's invasion of Abyssinia to influence public opinion internationally and to organize popular support for the peace keeping tasks of the League of Nations by coordinating relevant activities of groups and individuals from communist to conservative, atheist to religious, etc.; initiated in public by the British conservative Robert Viscount Cecil of Chelwood and the French radical socialist deputy and later Minister of the Popular Front Government Pierre Cot; supported by the COMINTERN as compatible with its popular front policy; its most spectacular effort was the Brussels International Peace Congress in 1936; the Second World War terminated its existence, except for the Swiss branch.

Files on meetings of the Comité International, the Conseil Général and the Comité Exécutif 1936-1939, consisting of proceedings, circulars, reports, press clippings; documents on the International Congress in Brussels, its preparation and the participation of women 1936: correspondence, proceedings, reports, resolutions, circulars, press clippings; documents on the Peace Pavilion at the World Exposition of 1937 in Paris 1936-1938; documents on the award of the Nobel Peace Prize to Viscount Cecil of Chelwood 1937, the World Conference for Action on the Bombardment of Open Towns and the Restoration of Peace in Paris 1938; documents from and concerning national committees, local and regional organizations in Belgium 1936-1937, China 1938, France 1936-1940, Great Britain 1936-1939, the Netherlands (including documents received or dispatched by the secretary) 1936-1940, Switzerland 1936-1949, etc.; documents on actions concerning Abyssinia 1937-1938, Spain 1937-1939, China and Japan 1937-1939, Czechoslovakia 1938, etc.; circulars 1936-1939; declarations, leaflets, pamphlets and reports 1936-1939; press clippings 1935-1939; periodicals of the RUP 1936-1939; correspondence by Rosa Manus relating to the RUP 1936-1938; copies and photocopies of (parts of) publications and studies on the RUP 1940-1987.
