Trivia
During George Washington's inauguration, the apparent cheering crowd of thousands was actually filmed with only around 80 people. They would stand in a square formation - edged by greenscreen cloth (the material TV weathermen use as backdrops because it turns invisible on camera so that digital backgrounds can be added). After filming a few seconds of giddy flag-waving, the 80 would switch positions, trade flags and buntings around, pick up different things (pitchforks, tankards, children, etc) and move over thirty feet. More cheering. More filming. Repeat. By day's end there were enough squares of different-looking crowd activity to stitch the lot together digitally and make it look like a seamless mob of thousands. Factual errors: After John Adams loses the 1800 election to Thomas Jefferson he is seen riding down the road from the White House in his carriage. In the distance down what is presumably Pennsylvania Avenue, the entire Capitol building of today is seen under construction. In actuality only a small section of the Capitol had been completed by 1800 and the full building as we know it today was not completed until after the Civil War See more »Quotes
John Adams: My thoughts are so clear to me... each one takes perfect shape within my mind. But when I speak, when I offer them to others, they seem to lose all definition.See more »
As fine a political documentary as I have ever seen! Understated, yet amazing in its depth. Even the exhilarating music portends the events to come. A must see for those interested in how the nation they live in came to be. This film may upset some with its frankness of the times in which the characters lived, that said, I applaud that very frankness that allows us to see the people that supported and opposed our becoming a nation. A very "well done" to all those involved with the making of this ode to a time long gone. May we as a nation once more learn the lessons that came to be so well known by the majority of our "Founding Fathers"... AND Mothers.
