Storyline

The time is the 24th century and the ship is the newly commissioned Enterprise-E. Its captain, Jean-Luc Picard, has been ordered not to interfere in a battle between a Borg Cube and ships from the Federation. However, seeing the Federation is about to lose, Picard ignore his orders and takes command of the defending fleet. With his knowledge of the Cube's weak spot, they destroy it. However, a small part of it escapes and plots a course directly for Earth. The Enterprise chases it and enters a time distortion created by the Borg. They end up in the mid-21st century, and their only chance of stopping the Borg from assimilating Earth is to help Zefram Cochrane make his famous first faster-than-light travel to the stars... Trivia

The character Zefram Cochrane was first seen in the original series episode Star Trek {Metamorphosis (#2.9)} played by Glenn Corbett. There are differences between the original Cochran and this character, most notably Kirk's identification of "Zephram Cochrane of Alpha Centauri?" but they are both noted space flight pioneers. This Zefram Cochrane role was actually written for James Cromwell. Tom Hanks was also considered for the role, but was unavailable as he was filming That Thing You Do!. Glenn Corbett could not reprise the role, he died from lung cancer in 1993. See more »

Goofs

Continuity: When the camera gets a shot of the holodeck doors right before Picard shoots the Borg wall with his phaser, the ID sticker on the door reads "08 HOLOSUITE 4". When the Borg force their fingers through the seam to open the door, the ID sticker now says "0820 HOLODECK 07". See more »

Not just the best Star Trek film
23 February 2005 | by ashley-120 (United Kingdom) – See all my reviews

Probably my favourite film of all time. The thing about First Contact is that it's not just about Star Trek. If you don't like Star Trek but can live through the first 20 minutes you'll find a gem of a movie which is as much about the future of humanity & an invention so wonderful as it is about Yet More Star Trek Plot.

Warp Speed - they've been saying that since Captain Kirk. But how did it happen? and why might it all not happen, our future could be in ruins and one flight of one makeshift spacecraft some time after world war III will make all the difference.

The on-screen relationship between Picard & Lily is totally magic, as is the relationship between the Enterprise crew members - you get a sense of team, of family.

First Contact is one film I enjoy watching again & again. The flight of the Phoenix is one scene I totally love, along with the end scenes.

The only sad thing about the movie is that you come away and deep down you know there is no Cochrain, no FTL engine around the corner. Well, not yet!

"I envy you, the world you're going to" "I envy you, taking these first steps"
