The International Plant Names Index
(IPNI) is a database of the names and
associated basic bibliographical details of
all seed plants. Its goal is to eliminate
the need for repeated reference to primary
sources for basic bibliographic information
about plant names. The data are freely
available and are gradually being
standardized and checked. IPNI will be a
dynamic resource, depending on direct
contributions by all members of the
botanical community.
IPNI is the product of a collaboration
between The Royal
Botanic Gardens, Kew, The
Harvard University Herbaria, and the
Australian National Herbarium
Since the soft launch in mid-December 1999 hit rates to the International Plant Names Index have been rising and the 100,000th
query was logged on May 25 2000.
Meanwhile we have been working hard to improve the quality and
quantity of the data available - the latest data set just
released includes additional records for recently published names
recorded until 23rd May 2000, as well as much data on geography
and basionyms not previously available in this form.
This port of the data uses immutable IDs
for the names, which
will make stable links to IPNI possible for other institutions. If
you would like to link your web site or database to IPNI then
