Tips For Writing A Regency Romance Novel

Regency romance novels are usually set during the British Regency period between 1811 and 1820. These novels have their own stylistic conventions and plots, quite different from romantic stories written through a particular historical setting. Some notable characteristics of these novels include fast paced dialog between characters, high quality intelligence and very little or no sex or discussion of the matter. If you’re looking to become a regency romantic writer, here are some useful tips to help you.

First, you need to understand that the regency area is basically a fantasy world brought to life by Georgette Heyer (through Jane Austen). It’s not an actual past but rather an imagined one that has been embellished relentlessly through the works of other writers afterwards. If you look closely, you will find that these romance novels actually have an ironic tone. There are a few regency romantic writers who write novels that aren’t amusing but most writers tend to go for the fun and amusing tone.

Secondly, these novels usually break the line between the traditional accepted way of life to the modern romantic era. As a matter of fact, they might have very little to do with what actually happened during that historic period. Basically, they whet the reader’s appetite without delving deeper into the historic times. During the regency era, society was governed by a lot of rules and most of the regency romantic novels tend to convey that.

There is a lot of difficulty that comes with writing in this genre. For instance, rather than follow the storyline, most regency readers are usually looking as to whether the characters are following the rules set by the previous regency writers. Every reader is looking through the trivial details to make sure that the writer followed all the rules. There is constant chatting in forums about common mistakes you’re likely to find in these books rather than the plot of the book itself. That’s why you should comb through these forums and get an idea of the mistakes to avoid before starting on your regency romance novels.

Any writer should always research on a particular era, especially if you’re writing historical fiction in order to present the facts accurately. That’s why the importance of researching on the Regency era can’t be underestimated. However, you should bear in mind that any good story doesn’t dwell on the fact whether the research is correct but if the story captures the audience. As a matter of fact, there are people who have written historically correct novels but the storylines are boring to the readers.

As for research, it would be fruitful to read the works of previous regency writers and follow in their footsteps. That way, you can’t stray too far away from the truth. Bear in mind that all the research you might find on the internet regarding this type of writing might not all be correct. That’s why you should check and counter check any facts before writing them down. Therefore, if you want to become an exceptional regency romance writer, avoid overwhelming yourself with the historical details but rather develop your plot.
