In the early evening on the 26th April 1980 Louise Faulkner and her 2 and a half year old daughter Charmian were standing outside their Acland Street residence in St Kilda. Louise’s neighbour Corrine stood alongside them and asked Louise if she was going away with her ‘potato farmer’ boyfriend. Corrine had heard about this man but had never met him.

Just as Louise replied that she was indeed going away with him, a white utility driven by a thick-set older man pulled up alongside them next to the kerb.

“Is this your potato farmer boyfriend?” Corrine asked Louise. “Yes” replied Louise. Corrine briefly glimpsed at the man in the twilight and whispered to Louise, “I think you can do better.”

As Louise and Charmian climbed up into the ute Corrine told Louise to have a good time. Louise replied that she would and the ute drove off. Louise and little Charmian would never again be seen. We conclude that sometime later that evening the mother and child were brutally murdered and their bodies disposed of. The location of their remains is unknown.

Twenty six years on, Herald Sun writer Russell Robinson has described the disappearance and death of Louise and Charmian as one of Victoria’s most ‘enduring criminal mysteries.’

But to the family and friends of Louise and Charmian there is no mystery. For they are certain beyond reasonable doubt that Louise’s ‘potato farmer’ boyfriend was none other than George Sutherland.
