Although it was known that "something" happened in Middlewich
during Roman times, the information was patchy and almost anecdotal.
During the late 1990s, Tim Strickland, a consultant archaeologist with
Gifford and Partners in Chester, met with the Town Clerk, Jonathan Williams, to
discuss the possibility of a wider, formal investigation of the Town's historic
links to the Roman Empire. Over a period of years, the idea grew and
culminated - at least so far - in the Roman Middlewich Project.
This has encompassed a book, written by Tim, two Roman Middlewich Festivals
that provided a celebration of the knowledge gained and a sharing of the
information with a much wider audience. They too place in 2001 and 2003,
both in September and were attended by thousands of people - literally!
This could be partially attributed to the fact that the Town Council entered
a partnership with several organisations, most notably, the Heritage Lottery
Fund (although support from Cheshire County Council and managed to ensure that
the event was free.
It is clearly more than that however, as even for free, people would not turn
up for an event unless they had at least a passing interest!
There are various websites giving greater information about the Roman
Middlewich Project than we can provide links to here, however those listed on
our links page are of particular interest and importance.
What is of enormous importance to the Town and indeed to Tim Strickland, is
that this project was so successful that Tim was awarded an MBE for his
work. All of those involved in the Project are grateful to Tim and
Jonathan for the work that they have carried out to bring this Project to the
fore.

Rest assured that it will be update also. |
