painting of the Hadley Common

Where the northernmost point of outer London meets the countryside lies Hadley Common and here you will find on a summer Saturday afternoon Monken Hadley CC playing their enthusiastic village cricket. Embraced by the village church, a pond and a number of grand houses around one side, the ground's other boundary then falls away across the Common down to Hadley Woods, creating a spectacular rural setting for great cricketing deeds, some of which may be more in the minds of the players than in reality.

The two Saturday teams both take part in the thriving local Herts League, currently sponsored by Saracens RFC. The fixtures take us along the leafy lanes of Hertfordshire to many interesting clubs and attractive grounds where the matches are keenly fought but nonetheless with a sense of humour. We may not aspire to the higher divisions of the league but are happy to be a junior side where our ambitions are for the enjoyment of each game itself and the comradeship of fellow players - and a glass of beer or two at the end. Being a village side essentially, with many of our members either coming from the local vicinity or having long connections with the area, there is a tradition of families playing in the club through the generations, sons of players often playing their first games in their early teens.

We welcome new members who are of a similar frame of mind, competent cricketers with an enthusiasm to enjoy themselves.

Cricket has been recorded as having been played here for nearly 150 years with match reports in the Barnet Press in the early 1860's. Other records tell us of matches in the very early twentieth century and local memories suggest that play continued until 1939. The present club was formed in 1954 and has performed continuously since then, also undertaking summer tours in many seasons to, variously, the Cotswolds, Derbyshire and Hampshire.
