Makeup By Khush Singh

MUSICandMODELING.com: Hometown and current location?
Khush Singh: New York City, but global assignments.

MUSICandMODELING.com: How did you get your start in the beauty industry?
Khush Singh: Well I was born with a brush in my hand! I originally focused on painting (and still do) but let my career develop within the entertainment genre by doing some minor modeling and then gasping for creative freedom promptly went into entertainment production, theater, film production and reporting. With a sound education in all these genres, I was able to go back and focus on my first love (much to the chagrin of my husband) painting. Only I started working on different canvases...the faces that grace runways, editorials, tv and film production.

MUSICandMODELING.com: Tell us about your training? Was it formal or were you self-taught?
Khush Singh: A painter is a painter, but I am mostly self taught. I have delved into courses offered by several schools, but mostly keeping abreast of the changes (informational and technique) that occur and are presented at several well known seminars each year. It also helps to have my own production company, plan several of my own shoots and host a quarterly Master Class series.

MUSICandMODELING.com: What is the most rewarding part of your job?
Khush Singh: Having the abiliy to work with strong collaborators and my work appreciated. Seeing your work in a magazine always give you a thrill!

MUSICandMODELING.com: What do you find most challenging about your job?
Khush Singh: The industry has changed dramatically in the last 10 years and the constant networking and job desciption has really undergone a metamorphisis. I am a professional Makeup Artist and this is my career, but you have many individuals in the market who take on the moniker of a makeup artist and provide services for free (whether it is a good job or bad job). I can understand that with photoshopping, a photoshop wizard can work wonders, but if you value your craft, you should charge an accomodating rate, than providing free services.

MUSICandMODELING.com: Where do you find your inspiration?
Khush Singh: From the canvas in front of me actually. As a painter, I find that the simplest flair or the accompanying palette of colours on a shoot allow me to create or rather enhance the canvases presented to me.

MUSICandMODELING.com: Who is/was your mentor or makeup role model?
Khush Singh: I rely on several individuals but Cindy Gardner wuld be my makeup role model.

MUSICandMODELING.com: What is lacking in the makeup artists today that you notice?
Khush Singh: Several people can have natural born talent, but it takes time to hone that talent into a skill. I think too many young makeup artists offer there services, without proper training or experience.

MUSICandMODELING.com: What advice do you have for someone wanting to become a makeup artist for theatre?
Khush Singh: Try to establish mentoring arrangements and assist other makeup artists. It allows you to build a support system and hone your craft.

MUSICandMODELING.com: What are three important skills required to be a makeup artist?
Khush Singh: Confidence in your abilities.
Patience. The days can be quite long on a set.
Dedication. Makeup Artistry is a difficult profession, but an easy hobby. Their is a difference.

MUSICandMODELING.com: What are some of your favorite products for hair and makeup?

Khush Singh: Makeup, I would say the cinema Secret and RCMA palette work wonders.
Embroylisse skincare. The hands down bestfor face and body prep.
My Shu Umera eyelash curler.
My Zuca case. I do not know what I would do without it.

MUSICandMODELING.com: Give us your best trick of the trade tip.

Khush Singh: Truly the eyebrows are the frame that surrouds those windows into the soul. Defining your brows can add a whole other look to a picture and truly set it above the bar. Otherwise...if I told you my fellow MUAs would crazy glue my kit.

MUSICandMODELING.com: What question do you wish we had asked you?

Khush Singh: What makeup artist make? what are the hours?

MUSICandMODELING.com: What is your answer to that question?

Khush Singh: It depends on how hard you work and how good you are at your craft. But on average a makeup artist in the firld for 5+ years averages 50K-60K in the tristate area. Much more if you are stedily woprking on TV and Film productions.

MUSICandMODELING.com: Do you have any upcoming projects that we can look out for?

Khush Singh: Several. Currently the key makeup artist for the Lifetime show Mom's Cooking and planning a new makeup book for the Asian/south Asian Woman

MUSICandMODELING.com: Final thoughts...what's on your mind?

Khush Singh: I love that you are bringing a true social networking environment for our community together. It can be very difficult to keep in touch with the many people you meet. Truly a great site. Thank you for having me and feel free to browse my websites and blog:
