The National Film and Sound Archive is pleased to present a selection of material relating to the landmark referendum of 1967. The referendum held on 27 May 1967 achieved an overwhelmng "yes" vote to remove two discriminatory references regarding Aboriginal people from the Australian Constitution. The NFSA recognises the 40th anniversary of the referendum by sharing material and associated information including a variety of moving image clips from our collection.

The material presented in this list ranges from 1966 to 2006. Collectively the list reflects both on the enduring importance of the referendum but also demonstrates the increasing desire by Indigenous Australians to harness audiovisual technologies to tell their own story. The introductory essay describes the importance of the referendum decisions and the evolving relationships between Indigenous Australians and audiovisual technology.

The list can be explored using the above timeline, or printed out as a PDF file below. The 1967 Referendum list is a small part of our Indigenous Collection which can be further investigated using our Search the Collection facility.
