scenes and handle the majority of the Recreation
Department’s finances. They assist the
Recreation Department in meeting all their
purchasing needs thus allowing the Department

The Recreation Department is very fortunate
to have an outstanding Maintenance
Division. Under the leadership and guidance
of Jimmy Hinson, these men are dedicated
to providing North Charleston residents
with quality facilities, beautiful parks, and
open green spaces.
On a daily basis, the Maintenance Division
services 27 baseball and softball fields,
9 soccer fields, 2 football fields, an in-line
hockey rink, a 400m track, 16 tennis courts
and 20 community centers. In addition to
these facilities, the Maintenance Division,
along with the North Charleston Public
Works Department, maintains grass areas
in the City including all shrubbery and
beautification projects.

Youth Athletics are for North Charleston
residents and the child must play in the area in
which they reside. However, non-residents
may register provided neither state nor
national affiliations have rules prohibiting
non-resident participation. The Recreation
Department Staff will assign non-residents
to an area for participation and an additional
$30 registration fee is charged. This applies
for all Youth Athletic programs.
A parent or legal guardian is required at
registration and must provide the child’s birth
certificate, proof of accident insurance, proof
of residence and payment of all fees.

The LSYSA, Lower State Youth Soccer Association, is a
competitive soccer league beginning in late August. All
LSYSA teams are eligible to compete in weekend
tournaments that are played on Saturdays and compete
against other LSYSA teams from around the Lowcountry.
It is recommended that each player in this league have at
least 1 year of playing experience.
Practices are held during the week and on Sundays and an
additional uniform cost of $75 is also required.

The Industrial Basketball program is offered to area company
employees as a recreational outlet outside of the workplace.
This promotes morale and encourages team unity in the work
place and on the court. For more information, please call

The North Charleston Recreatoin Department, in
cooperation with Sandpiper Bowing Center, will sponsor a
Friday Night Mixers Co-Ed Bowling league in the fall. For
more information, please contact Cindy Dambaugh.
The Disc Golf course is located on the outer eight islands of
historic Park Circle. Open play is Monday–Sunday, daylight–
dark. If interested in playing Doubles, meet at the #1 tee,
Tuesdays at 5:00 pm, for play beginning at 6:00 pm. For
more information, please contact Cindy Dambaugh.
This program is operated in conjunction with the South
Carolina Flag Football Association. Games are held on
Tuesday and Wednesday evenings at MWV/KapStone Park.

The Recreation Department, in conjuction with Fly Dog
Fitness, offers Boot Camps Mondays–Thursdays from
6:00–7:00 pm and Mondays, Wednesdays, & Fridays from
6:00–7:00 am. All levels are welcome. For more infromation

The Adult Kickball program is operated in conjunction with
the World Kickball Association and is offered in the spring
and the fall. Games are held on Tuesday and Thursday
evenings from 6:00–8:30 pm. For team or individual

All pools charge $1 per day. Season Passes are available for
the entire summer and are valid at all four pools. A Family
Pass costs $50 and an Individual Pass costs $30.
All children under the age of 10 must be supervised by a
parent, or relative, over the age of 18 during all recreational
swim hours and pool rentals. There is
no exception
to this rule.
The Department rents the City’s four swimming pools for
private parties. Rentals are permitted on a space available
basis. Rentals for Danny Jones, Collins Park and Felix
Pinckney pools are scheduled through the Park Circle
office at 745-1028. Rentals for Northwoods Park pool are
scheduled through the Northwoods office at 572-5410. No
alcoholic beverages or loud music will be permitted at any
pool rental and all other City pool rules apply during rentals.

is a major part of the annual Cultural Arts Festival of North
Charleston. Children are encouraged to dress in weather

Come ride the big-wheel tricycle, maneuver through the
obstacle course and dance around the Maypole. The Big Red
Fire Truck, police cruisers and special canine guests will be
present and during the last hour of the Festival, a special

Bingo for Seniors! On the last Friday of every month, excluding
November and December, bingo games are held at Park Circle
from 11:00 am–1:00 pm. Cards are $0.25 each and prizes are

The Recreation Department JOY Program, in partnership
with Sandpiper Bowing Lanes on Ashley Phosphate Road,
invite you to enjoy Senior Bowling Monday, Wedesday, and
Friday from 9:00 am–12:00 pm. Practice bowling is also
offered from 9:00–9:30 am. No cost for shoes, however
league fees do apply.
The Recreation Department sponsors day trips for our local
Senior Chapters. A variety of local sites, as well as in-state day
trips, are included in the itenerary. Trip costs are minimal and
plans for meals will be announced. Specific trip information is
made available to all Senior Chapters prior to trips.
JOY stands for Just Older Youth and the JOY members meet
at various JOY sites in the city.. For specific meeting times
and additional information on any senior chapter, please
contact Belinda Swindler.
Senior Line Dancing is one of the largest and fastest growing
programs among our Senior Adults. Led by Mr. Merrill
Ridgeway, this class meets Monday mornings at Park Circle
at 10:00 am, and a beginners class is held just before at 9:00 am.
A traveling component of the class is the North Charleston
Recreation Boot Stompers. This groups is available to entertain
at nursing homes and other functions. Class participants dance
to a grand variety of music. Don’t miss this opportunity to

The North Charleston Recreation Department hosts a
luncheon for all JOY chapter members during the year.
Lunch and entertainment is provided.
Quilting and sewing are enjoyed at the Gethsemani Community

The Senior Line Dancing class, ages 50+,offers a beginners

4-H began as a rural youth movement in the early
20th Century and have developed into one of the largest
youth organizations in the United States. 4-H helps urban,
suburban, and rural youth, along with adults, learn, grow,
and work together for positive change. Co-sponsored by
the Clemson Extension Service, 4-H is available to any youth
between ages 5–17. Please call the Community Center for
the next group meeting.
A computer lab is available for educational assistance to
youths and adults.
The Djole (Jo-lay) Dance Company is a West African Dance
&
Drum Company comprised of youth from the Union
Heights Community. One of Djole’s goals is to help combat
the Global AIDS crisis. They have traveled to Africa to assist
in the fight against AIDS. Rehearsals are held Mondays at

Thursdays of each month, a movie is
shown at the Community Center. To find out what movies
are playing, calls can be directed to the Community Center a
week ahead of show time. Previous movies that have been
shown include
Blood Diamonds, Coach Carter, Last King of
Scotland,

Madea’s Family Reunion.
Quilting class is held every Wednesday morning, from
September–May, at 10:00 am. Participants are given patterns
for various styles of quilts to complete.
Every Monday morning at 11:00 am, Senior Adults gather to
participate in various craft projects. Previous projects have
included photo plates, seasonal, and holiday crafts.
Fitness equipment is available for use by area residents age
13+. Some of the equipment includes a treadmill, an ab
roller, a skiing machine, and more.
