Millie Brown and Deni Grant are behind the 
scenes and handle the majority of the Recreation 
Department’s finances. They assist the 
Recreation Department in meeting all their 
purchasing needs thus allowing the Department 
to best serve the citizens of North Charleston. 
Their daily work with vendors is a must for the 
Department’s continued success. 

The Recreation Department greatly appreciates 
Millie and Deni’s support and dedication to 
improving the quality of life for North Charleston

The Recreation Department is very fortunate 
to have an outstanding Maintenance 
Division. Under the leadership and guidance 
of Jimmy Hinson, these men are dedicated 
to providing North Charleston residents 
with quality facilities, beautiful parks, and 
open green spaces.

On a daily basis, the Maintenance Division 
services 27 baseball and softball fields, 
9 soccer fields, 2 football fields, an in-line 
hockey rink, a 400m track, 16 tennis courts 
and 20 community centers. In addition to 
these facilities, the Maintenance Division, 
along with the North Charleston Public 
Works Department, maintains grass areas 
in the City including all shrubbery and 
beautification projects.

Youth Athletics are for North Charleston 
residents and the child must play in the area in 
which they reside. However, non-residents 
may register provided neither state nor 
national affiliations have rules prohibiting 
non-resident participation. The Recreation 
Department Staff will assign non-residents 
to an area for participation and an additional 
$30 registration fee is charged. This applies 
for all Youth Athletic programs.

A parent or legal guardian is required at 
registration and must provide the child’s birth 
certificate, proof of accident insurance, proof 
of residence and payment of all fees.

baseball tournament hosted by the North Charleston

post-season tournament.

Junior Golf Association.

ability to launch a football by utilizing the three primary ball

The City of North Charleston Recreational Soccer league 
begins in late September. The Recreation Department staff  
is responsible for assigning players to teams within the area 
that they reside. Players receive a pair of shorts, socks and a 

game jersey, and are responsible for providing their own shin 
guards and cleats. Soccer games are played on weeknights 
and Saturdays. 

ages:

 U-9, U-10, U-11, U-12, U-13, U-14, and U-15 

as of August 1, 2010. Teams will be formed based on number of 
players registered within each age group.

The LSYSA, Lower State Youth Soccer Association, is a 
competitive soccer league beginning in late August. All 
LSYSA teams are eligible to compete in weekend 
tournaments that are played on Saturdays and compete 
against other LSYSA teams from around the Lowcountry.  
It is recommended that each player in this league have at 
least 1 year of playing experience. 

Practices are held during the week and on Sundays and an 
additional uniform cost of $75 is also required.

The Industrial Basketball program is offered to area company 
employees as a recreational outlet outside of the workplace.

The North Charleston Recreatoin Department, in 
cooperation with Sandpiper Bowing Center, will sponsor a

The Disc Golf course is located on the outer eight islands of 
historic Park Circle. Open play is Monday–Sunday, daylight–
dark. If interested in playing Doubles, meet at the #1 tee,

This program is operated in conjunction with the South 
Carolina Flag Football Association. Games are held on 
Tuesday and Wednesday evenings at MWV/KapStone Park.

All pools charge $1 per day. Season Passes are available for 
the entire summer and are valid at all four pools. A Family 
Pass costs $50 and an Individual Pass costs $30.

All children under the age of 10 must be supervised by a 
parent, or relative, over the age of 18 during all recreational 
swim hours and pool rentals. There is 

no exception

 to this rule.

The Department rents the City’s four swimming pools for 
private parties. Rentals are permitted on a space available 
basis. Rentals for Danny Jones, Collins Park and Felix 
Pinckney pools are scheduled through the Park Circle  
office at 745-1028. Rentals for Northwoods Park pool are 
scheduled through the Northwoods office at 572-5410. No 
alcoholic beverages or loud music will be permitted at any 
pool rental and all other City pool rules apply during rentals.

North Charleston Community Centers, in partnership with 
all CCSD 4 elementary schools, 13 total, host an Afterschool 
Program during the school year. Students ages 5–12 are 
eligible to attend the program which operates Monday–
Friday from 2:30–5:30 pm. 

The program schedule allows time for children to complete 
homework assignments and enjoy crafts, sports, and games. 
Registration dates at school based programs vary, check with 
your school for dates. Children must be registered for this

The Children’s Festival, held from 9:00 am–12:00 pm, April 
30, 2010,  
is a major part of the annual Cultural Arts Festival of North 
Charleston. Children are encouraged to dress in weather 
appropriate, comfortable clothes as activities will be held 
outdoors. 

Come ride the big-wheel tricycle, maneuver through the 
obstacle course and dance around the Maypole. The Big Red 
Fire Truck, police cruisers and special canine guests will be 
present and during the last hour of the Festival, a special 
guest will perform in the auditorium. Light refreshments will

The Djole (Jo-lay) Dance Company is a West African Dance

 Drum Company comprised of youth from the Union 

Heights Community. One of Djole’s goals is to help combat 
the Global AIDS crisis. They have traveled to Africa to assist 
in the fight against AIDS. Rehearsals are held Mondays at

Discover freshwater and saltwater fishing and much more! 
Enjoy learning about offshore and inshore fishing safety, 
become familiar with different types of rods, reels, baits and 
lures. Great field trips are planned for the campers to 
experience.

Camp sessions are offered from 8:00 am–5:00 pm, June 
14–18 and June 21–June 25. Each camper receives a colorful 
camp shirt and is required to wear this shirt on field

Bring your children and watch as they scurry around Park 
Circle in search of all the colorful Easter eggs. One of the 
oldest and most anticipated Easter events, the Spring 
Forward Extravaganza 

&

 Parade will take place March 26, 

2010 from 10:00 am–12:00 pm. 

Hundreds of eggs are hidden on the grounds and the 
children fill their baskets to present to the Easter Bunny for 
counting. After all of the eggs have been counted, the Easter 
Bunny then leads the children in an Easter Parade around 
Park Circle. Light refreshments are provided, as well as

The Recreation Department hosts an exciting summer camp 
from June 7–August 6. The camp provides a safe and secure 
environment and offers the opportunity for children to have 
fun during the summer. Children enjoy a variety of activities 
including arts and crafts, games, sports, swimming, cultural 
art center visits, and special surprises. The Punt, Pass, & Kick 
Competition and the Step Team are additional components 
to the summer camp program.

Each camper receives a colorful camp shirt and is required to 
wear this shirt on field trips. The Summer Feeding Program 
will provide daily lunches for all campers. Registration is 
offered at Felix Pinckney, Gethsemani, Jeanene Batten, 
Northwoods Park, Park Circle, and City Hall. Please contact

Team program. Each community center has the opportunity 
to compete against other centers. The Step Teams design 
their own step routines and any team using music in their 
routine will have to get approval from the Program Director.

sportsmanship, rhythm and originality, and are eligible to 
compete in 3 major competitions held in January, February,

Bingo for Seniors! On the last Friday of every month, excluding 
November and December, bingo games are held at Park Circle 
from 11:00 am–1:00 pm. Cards are $0.25 each and prizes are 
awarded for winners!

The Recreation Department JOY Program, in partnership 
with Sandpiper Bowing Lanes on Ashley Phosphate Road, 
invite you to enjoy Senior Bowling Monday, Wedesday, and 
Friday from 9:00 am–12:00 pm. Practice bowling is also 
offered from 9:00–9:30 am. No cost for shoes, however 
league fees do apply.

The Recreation Department sponsors day trips for our local 
Senior Chapters. A variety of local sites, as well as in-state day 
trips, are included in the itenerary. Trip costs are minimal and 
plans for meals will be announced. Specific trip information is 
made available to all Senior Chapters prior to trips.

JOY stands for Just Older Youth and the JOY members meet 
at various JOY sites in the city.. For specific meeting times 
and additional information on any senior chapter, please 
contact Belinda Swindler.

Senior Line Dancing is one of the largest and fastest growing 
programs among our Senior Adults. Led by Mr. Merrill 
Ridgeway, this class meets Monday mornings at Park Circle  
at 10:00 am, and a beginners class is held just before at 9:00 am. 
A traveling component of the class is the North Charleston 
Recreation Boot Stompers. This groups is available to entertain 
at nursing homes and other functions. Class participants dance 
to a grand variety of music. Don’t miss this opportunity to 
make new friends and have fun dancing! Please call Merill

The North Charleston Recreation Department hosts a 
luncheon for all JOY chapter members during the year. 
Lunch and entertainment is provided.

Quilting and sewing are enjoyed at the Gethsemani Community 
Center on Monday mornings at 10:00 am, September–May, 
and at the Live Oak Sewing Room at Tuesdays and Thursdays, 
11:00 am–1:00 pm.

The Red Hat Ladies is a social group for Senior Ladies ages 
60+. The women meet the 2

 Monday of each month at 1:00 

pm. This group enjoys great fellowship and fun and takes 
special day trips throughout the tri-county area. The ladies also 
sponsor the Red Hat Ladies’ Tea in July of each year. 

Join us for fun and low aerobic exercise on Tuesday and 
Thursday mornings at Felix Davis Community Center 
from10:30–11:15 am.

In cooperation with Comcast Spotlight, we will host a Senior 
Fair Expo on Friday, April 23 from 10:00 am–2:00 pm at the 
Felix C. Davis Community Center. Please contact Belinda

Seniors meet Monday through Friday at 7:30 am for fun and 
exercise on the tennis courts at the Danny Jones Complex. 
For more information, please call Mr. Dan Thomas at 
744-0145.

Come join us as we Walk the Circle for fun and fitness. Join 
the Walk the Circle group and record your laps each time you 
walk. Set your goal and go for it! During May and November, 
we will meet and recognize the accomplishments of our 
registered walkers.

An indoor water aerobics class is offered Monday–Thursday 
mornings, 8:30–9:00 am at Premier Rehabilitation located at 
2070 Northbrook Boulevard, North Charleston. For

An outdoor water aerobics class is offered at Northwoods

Fire Museum and Educational Center,

Hurdzan, captures the traditional flavor of  
low-flowing earthworks, classic bunkering, and 
the framing of each hole by area vegetation.

area vegetation, the course provides a sense  
of isolation and privacy while playing each  
hole.The course also offers 5 tees per hole  
for all levels of golfers to truly enjoy playing  
at Wescott. The course is open daily from  
7:00 am–6:00 pm during winter months  
and from 7:00 am–7:00 pm during summer 
months with golf prices starting at $32. Please

The 6,000+ square foot, antebellum style 
clubhouse can accommodate up to 300 guests. 
With gorgeous hardwood floors, 2 fireplaces, 
vaulted ceilings, a complete wrap-around 
porch, as well as a full in-house catering staff, 
the Golf Club at Wescott is a spectacular

4-H began as a rural youth movement in the early  
20th Century and have developed into one of the largest 
youth organizations in the United States. 4-H helps urban, 
suburban, and rural youth, along with adults, learn, grow,  
and work together for positive change. Co-sponsored by  
the Clemson Extension Service, 4-H is available to any youth 
between ages 5–17. Please call the Community Center for 
the next group meeting.

A computer lab is available for educational assistance to 
youths and adults.

The Djole (Jo-lay) Dance Company is a West African Dance 

&

 Drum Company comprised of youth from the Union 

Heights Community. One of Djole’s goals is to help combat 
the Global AIDS crisis. They have traveled to Africa to assist 
in the fight against AIDS. Rehearsals are held Mondays at

shown at the Community Center. To find out what movies 
are playing, calls can be directed to the Community Center a 
week ahead of show time. Previous movies that have been

 Madea’s Family Reunion. 

Quilting class is held every Wednesday morning, from 
September–May, at 10:00 am. Participants are given patterns 
for various styles of quilts to complete. 

Every Monday morning at 11:00 am, Senior Adults gather to 
participate in various craft projects. Previous projects have 
included photo plates, seasonal, and holiday crafts.

Fitness equipment is available for use by area residents age 
13+.  Some of the equipment includes a treadmill, an ab 
roller, a skiing machine, and more.
