Our mission

A mission to cure tropical and infectious diseases

A mission to cure tropical and infectious diseases

The Novartis Institute for Tropical Diseases aims to discover novel treatments and prevention methods for major tropical diseases. In developing countries where these diseases are endemic, Novartis will make treatments readily available, without profit to poor patients.

NITD has state-of the-art discovery technology. As a major center of excellence for drug discovery, NITD will offer exceptional teaching and training opportunities for post-doctoral fellows and graduate students.

Fulfilling a neglected need, fighting endemic diseases

The majority of patients in the developing world do not have access to modern medicine. One major reason why is the lack of effective and safe medicines to treat a range of infectious tropical diseases. NITD aims to address this need by applying the Novartis drug discovery science and technology.

Creating a pipeline and center of knowledge

NITD strives to:

  • Become a center of excellence for drug discovery in the areas of dengue, tuberculosis, and malaria;
  • Contribute to the education of young scientists from countries where these diseases are endemic.

Within the next few years, NITD aims to achieve the ambitious goal of producing a robust pipeline of drug candidates to treat dengue, tuberculosis and malaria. By 2012, our goal is to have at least two drug candidates in patient trials.
